Mercy vs. South Nassau
I delivered DD at Mercy 3 1/2 years ago and had a good experience. I am now pregnant with twins and will be delivering there as well. However, I keep hearing great things about South Nassau. Does anyone know how the two NICU's compare between the two hospitals? I have a feeling these babies will be slightly premature, so that is obviously a priority. TIA

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I delivered my first son at South Nassau and had a fantastic experience. I also delivered at Mercy too. My twins were born at 29.5 weeks and I walked in fully dilated at shift change. I can't say a bad thing about Mercys NICU. They saved my babies and I have two healthy 8 month olds now. The nurses were amazing! While I have no experience at South Nassau's NICU, I hear it is a level 2 and Mercy is a level 3. Supposedly South Nassau would not have been able to handle my babies and would've been sent out. I would deliver at Mercy if they are premature just so you know you won't be separated from them.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
According to the NYS Dept. of Health Mercy is a Level 3 NICU while South Nassau is a Level 2 (out of 4, with 4, or regional being the best) which is what LIJ, North Shore in Manhasset and Winthrop are.
Typically a Level 3 can care for babies as young as 28 weeks, while Level 2 can care for babies as young as 32 weeks.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
let me preface this by saying that i have no experiece with the maternity ward at Mercy but I do with the hospital in general. I will NEVER step foot on Mercy Hospital property again. They hospital in general does not have a good reputation and has MANY on-going, curret lawsuits pending.
Unfortunately, i lost my father as a result of the care (or lack thereof) that he received there
If I had a choice, 100% South Nassua for many, many reasons!

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I had both kids there via c-section and will have my third there. I love their Maternity and have 100% confidence with them and their NICU. I don't associate the Maternity with the rest of the hospital. It is totally different, IMO.
