Re: Merrick people who commute to NYC or Jersey City...
Well, I grew up in Merrick-- and when I first graduated college, I did the commute into the city... Trains, depending on express or not ran 49 to 54 mins if I recall correctly.
Then from Penn-- since I used to live in Hoboken, I am very familiar with the PATH. PATH train from Penn to Hobo was a 15 min total ride. Door to door when I worked on 37th, was 35 mins...
Depending on what stop you have in JC, then your walk, the ride would probably be 15 to 20 mins-- but the trains sit at the station (only at Penn) for a while, even after they pull in--so you need to tack on prob 5 mins or so of travel time for that.
HTH.

Re: Merrick people who commute to NYC or Jersey City...
When we lived in Merrick, trains pretty frequently into Penn... an express train took about 40 minutes, local stops added another ten minutes or so. Our house was walking distance to the train station, but when we drove, parking wasn't bad if you got there before 8.
My sister lives in Jersey City and the actual ride on the Path to Manhattan is about 20 minutes. The trains run every 20 minutes during prime commuting time, less often on weekends and later at night.

Re: Merrick people who commute to NYC or Jersey City...
If you are commuting from lower manhattan to jersey city say to exchange place then the actual ride is about 5-7 mins on the path through the World Trade station.
The subway ride to World Trade from Penn is about 10 mins.
The ride from Merrick to Penn is about 50 mins.
so 50+10+7 plus some walking to each hub I would say is about 75 mins. One hour 15 mins on a good day when everything works.

Not true, parking is ATROCIOUS at Merrick if you arrive anytime after 720. I take the 743 train out in the AM and sometimes I can't even get a spot!
I drive from the North side of town and it takes 7 minutes if I do the speed limit and I work right by Penn, so my door to door is just short of an hour.
Let me know if you have any other questions, I commute from there everyday!

We're moving there in a month or so and our friends who live a few blocks away from us (south merrick) say that if they get to the train station before 8, there is usually parking, also she said the express train is 40 mins into the city

During the summer, yes. When everyone goes back in the fall, there is no where to park if you get there anytime after 725-730. I literally got there at 730 last week and got the last spot in that little lane that goes onto Sunrise...hahahah. Then I ran all the way to the train and the conducter was nice enough to open the doors for me because they were already closed.

UGHHH!!! That's just like the Oceanside station..you would think the Merrick station is soooo big compared to Oceanside there would be more parking!!! DH won't have a problem he leaves ultra early in the AM, and I'm home with DD now, so no parking for me!!

Yeah it is big but unfortunately thats what attracts everyone to it. Especially because anywhere further west of there is permit parking only...(freeport, RVC, not sure about Lynbrook ) but everyone goes there from Merrick (North and South), parts of Bellmore (North and South), people that are too lazy to get a permit at Freeport, East Meadow, Uniondale, etc etc...sometimes I see cars with out of state plates there! its always packed and its really frustrating when you actually LIVE here and can't park. I kinda WISH they'd move over to permit parking for residents only.

Re: Merrick people who commute to NYC or Jersey City...
I just moved to Merrick in Feb.
My commute won't help you since I drop off DD @ daycare 1st. She's in East Rockaway, that's where I catch the train.
I see the Merrick train station full in the am, although, even when I get there around 8:30, I still get a spot.
If it were a straight commute from Merrick to Penn, I think it's just about an hour (parking, walking to train, etc.. )

Re: Merrick people who commute to NYC or Jersey City...
I can tell you how the commute from Bellmore is - I used to take the 7:29 train and worked on the upper west side. I would leave my house in N. Bellmore at 7:15 and get to my desk at 8:45. So 1 1/2 hours total door to door.

WHERE?!?!?!?!?! Please share where you're parking at 830??????? I'd love to know if there is some secret place I'm missing!

Yep, I work with someone that lives in Wantagh and she drives to the Merrick station because she can't ever get parking by her.

I live in East Rockaway & work in Jersery City.
My company moved the offices from downtown. Door to door my commute is 1 hr 45 minutes each way. That is, when the trains run properly. My commute sucks!

I just wrote to the TOH to find out why Bellmore and Merrick are the only 2 public lots on the South Shore. I want to know!

not to hijack.. but we have the same problem in Baldwin. Our lot is filled up by about 7:00, then the lots on Sunrise and parking spaces on Brooklyn Ave are filled by 8 pm. We park at the very very end of Brooklyn ave (about 10 min walk to the station!) every day. People from RVC and Oceanside come to Baldwin and park and take the train from there because you don't need a permit to park. It's incredibly frustrating because the people who actually live in the town can't find parking! I've been on the train and heard people from RVC laugh about it (i used to live in RVC, the parking permit there was $80ish a year) because they can come park for free in Baldwin. talk about !
We did write to TOH and were told that there was essentially nothing we could do about it

According to the LIRR, the express from Merrick is 48 minutes (and that is without any delays). I am on the same train line, but several stops west of Merrick and my express train is 40 minutes.
ETA -- It's easy to look up how long the train is: LIRR All Train Schedules
Also remember that "on schedule" for the LIRR is within 3 minutes of the posted time... so always think of your train ride as give or take 3 - 6 minutes.

I thought on schedule was 5:59 to be considered on time.

Thanks. I did the commute for years and DH still does it from Oceanside every day, and all I know is that that 3-6 min rule is BS...the LB line was always always late but still "on time"
