Does anyone know if Michelle Kwan has made a decision of backing out of the Olympics?

Re: michelle kwan

not sure, but i think she has until the 19th to decide. Honestly, I don't think she should be there now. I think it was very unfair to Emily Hughes.

I read something to that effect. I agree, I think the injury waiver was BS, Emily Hughes should have been there.

Re: michelle kwan

i think if she didn't go there would be a lot of controversy. they let nancy kerrigan go and she didn't skate at the championship

Re: michelle kwan

As of this AM she was still in but she said in a press conference that she will listen to her body and if doesn't feel right she won't compete.

Yea, I heard that too and think it is totally unfair. If she doesn't feel right TODAY she should drop out so that Emily can officially train and prepare herself physically and mentally. She knows what its like to be in this position and needs to step down. She could not even do her routine or any jumps in practice for a competition that is days away. I think this whole waiver thing was a bunch of bull and was totally based on her reputation rather than her performance!!

Nancy Kerrigan's situation was litle differnt , b/c she had performed well all season & she was only unabel to compete at nationals, b/c she was attacked.

Does anyone know if Emily Hughes is in Torino? Does the alternate go & prepare just in case?

Re: michelle kwan

I would guess that Hughes is training right now, just in case she has to compete. It's not like she's sitting on her azz wasting practice time.

Still, I'd imaginw you'd train differently if it was a "maybe" as oppose dot a "definitely"

evne if you logically know you shoudl train just in case, it is probably difficult to get as mentally prepared for it, if you just don't know.

If she bails, I hope she does it soon.

It's got to be hard for Michelle to let go. If she had gone to those Olympics instead of Nancy (or Tonya) she most likely would have taken that gold medal.

Just like it's unfair that Michelle took Emily's spot, it was unfair when Nancy took Michelle's spot. But, it was MOST unfair that Tonya (a friggin "attacker") got to go at all...

i agree. the way michelle and nancy couldn't compete at nationals was different. but the way they got to the olympics is the same way

Re: michelle kwan

I, for one, hope she is feeling better and wins. She still had to petition the committee and audition for them -she couldn't compete in the Nationals because of an injury - the same one that may keep her out now. It's not exaclty like she said she just didn't feel she needed to bother.

I feel bad for Emily, but she at least has time to do it again- there is basically no chance Michelle will make it to the next one.

They just had Emily on News 4 before and she's in NY ready to go at the drop of a hat she says. She didn't seem bitter - she seems so sweet! But, I'd just like to see Michele finally win a gold.

Re: michelle kwan

The difference is that Nancy Kerrigan had been competing all season and winning and was attacked. Kwan has only competed once in the past year and only a few times the year before. She placed 4th at World's and that was the only time she has competed under the new scoring system. Kerrigan was at the top of her game when she was placed on the Olympic team, Kwan just isn't.

As far as Hughs, I am sure that she is training. The problem is that if Kwan drops out Emily has to get on a plane and fly to Italy and then compete. The alternates for the skating teams were not taken to Italy. A decision I really don't understand, but it wasn't mine to make.

Re: michelle kwan

i hope michelle feels better and wins too. mostly b/c i couldn't stomach watching emily skate at the olympics. i'm sure she's a lovely person, but as a skater she is NOT olympic caliber yet. 2010 will be her time.

i pretty sure michelle will end up skating though. her triple toe looked awesome in the video i saw. plus it's only the first day and yesterday must have been tiring at the opening ceremony and all. i think she was so upset about the flip b/c it's the jump that messed salt lake up for her. so it's probably bringing up bad memories more than causing physical pain.

Re: michelle kwan

Honestly, I think Michelle Kwan has already peaked. I have to admit though, if I felt like a gold medal might possibly be in my reach and this was my last chance, I don't think I would be so quick to give up my spot.

Re: michelle kwan

I think Michelle is pushing herself because she may feel this is her final time to get a gold. She lost it to Tara Lipinski, then to Sarah Hughs. Now this is her third time and it could be her last.

I've seen Emily Hughs skate and I think 2010 will be her time to shine. She needs to polish up just a little more and come 2010 it will be all about her.

Ahh, that's what I wans't sure of. I thougth Michelle Kwan had been there when she was an alternate, but I wasn't sure if that was standard practice.

So. . that's why it would be awful if Michelle Kwan waited untill the 19th, b/c they compete on the 21st, the long flight & the jet lag won't help Emily Hughes at all.

I think that is a lot to assume, b/c Michelle Kwan was very young & inexperienced back then ( although so was Oksan Baiul, who won that year)

I do agreee, Tonya Harding should have been disqualified, but I think they didn't have enough evidence at the time that she was involved. She claimed her ex-husband did it without her knowledge.
