Mid night wakings?????
How do you know if your DC is just working you, or gassy, or teeth pain?
I wanted to try a little CIO over this spring break so I can handle the lack of sleep but she would screech and she broke my heart last night but as soon as I'd pick her up she would be FINE! I think she's working me but how can you be sure. I don't want to leave her there crying in pain. How do you determine?
I have a feeling this CIO thing just isn't going to work for us.

Re: Mid night wakings?????
i know DS is fine if he does what syd did to you - cries but is fine as soon as you pick her up.
i have done that twice (picked him up) just for my own piece of mind but now i just let him cry. he may get a bit hysterical but he always always goes back to sleep - and wakes up happy as a clam in the morning.
she won't remember if you let her cry, and she will be fine
ETA: i have let him CIO when he was teething, but i do sometimes slip in there to give him tylenol or motrin to make sure he's not in a lot of pain.

Re: Mid night wakings?????
You just described Madelyn to a tee. You might wind up doing what we did- we finally just got so fed up with being woken up at 2am that we FINALLY bit the bullet and did CIO.
I followed the Healthy Sleep Habits extinction method- which essentially is totally NOT going in at ALL. We put her down at 7 and hat was it- NO going in. For times she was teething- we gave Motrin before bed which lasts 6-8 hours.
She was 10 months old when we finally reached our breaking point and did it. YES- it sucked, but it did work. We still had setbacks every few months where she'd wake and cry in the middle of the night- so we'd have to deal with *ignoring* her. I hated every second of it- but I hated the growing resentment I was feeling toward her even more.
Now she's 22 months old and is a sleeping champ. She goes down at 6:30 and is up between 5:30-6:30 with nary a peep in the night.

Sounds like there's a whole lot of suck it up and let her CIO in my future. Isn't there any other way???? I dread nightime now.

Two things got us through- ear plugs and white noise. It lasted3-4 days TOPS with the first night being the worst.
There ARE other no-cry methods, and I know the HSHHC book has a less severe method. My DD would FREAK if we went in at all though- which is why even the Ferber method wasn't going to work.
