Middle Country/Sachem School Districts
Can anyone please give me information on this school district.
We are looking in Lake Grove and Centereach areas, so any info on those towns would be really appreciated also.
Thanks.
One more question. What about Sachem?

Re: Middle Country School District
I just bought a house in Centereach. I do not have any kids so S.D. was not super important to me right now, but I would not feel hesitant at all to send any kids I might have in the future there.

Funny you should post this. We just got an offer accepted on a house in Selden and I know a little about the district, but not a whole lot. I haven't heard anything terrible about it at all. It is a big district and I am sure there are pros and cons.

My kids go to school in this district. They are going into 1st and 3rd grade in the fall. We are very happy so far and the kids are doing really well.

I personally would choose Middle Country over Sachem. IMO, Sachem is too big of a school district.

I've heard Sachem is better than Middle Country. Guess can't lose with either one! One thing I do not like about Sachem is the size, but I have a feeling new schools will be opening before my not yet conceived kids will be in high school!

Re: Middle Country/Sachem School Districts
IMO, the reason that Sachem seems so much better is that they are HUGE! B/c they are so big, they have a lot of talent to pull from (ie: the sports teams were always AWESOME b/c with that many kids you can have a very easy time finding 12 really good ones to make a basketball team!) So they get a lot of media attention. Same, I guess with academics.
They do have a lot of problems passing school budgets and things. I think that last year the proposed school budget was like over 20%! Most of that is due to the fact they built Sachem East.
If your kids really want to play sports and things, it is not easy to make the teams and whatnot. But, then again, I am a bit biased!

I've heard Sachem is stronger than Middle Country as well, and they keep on opening more and more schools so I'm not concerned about it's size. I went to Smithtown which wasn't a small school either (I went when it was the 1 HS).

Re: Middle Country/Sachem School Districts
My point about Sachem was a concern due to the size. I personally feel that because of the number of students, they wouldn't have a chance to get on sports teams and etc. I was not speaking to academics. Personally, I would prefer a smaller district. That is all. Just wanted to clarify. I feel like people misinterpreted what I said.

Re: Middle Country/Sachem School Districts
I can't comment on Middle Country, but, I have lived within the boundaries of Sachem for almost 29 years. Both my daughters graduated from there and, IMO, this is not the cream of the crop as far as school districts are concerned. It is a middle-of-the-road school system; nothing outstanding. They spend between $14,000 and $15,000 per student and I have never seen the outstanding academics that shoud come from that expediture. While there are children who do excel, they would have excelled in most any district. 60% of my taxes go to this district and I should be getting more bang for the buck.
About six years ago, it was decided that Sachem needed to build three new schools - 2 middle schools and 1 high school. While the initial tax increase was only 1.9% (which was only for the building of these schools), the cost to open them came to an unbelievable increase of 18%! The reason for building these schools was because they anticipated an increase in students. However, the opposite has occurred. Student population has, actually, declined. There aren't any large tracts of land left within the district for the building of developments which would bring in a large influx of children. The most you get now are builders who erect three to five houses at a time. These schools were never needed. They only needed to expand on the existing schools, but, the voters were never given that option.
Last year our taxes only went up 1.6%. This year there wasn't any increase because they relied on the money the State was giving. Bad move. There is a new supervisor. The old one retired two years ago (THANK GOD). Time will tell what this new person will do.
This is an O.K. district. If you have a child who doesn't require any services (my older daughter), you will think this is a great district. However, if you have a child who does requires services (my younger daughter), be prepared to fight for everything you want. You will talk to people who swear by this district and others who swear at it. You will be disappointed if you are expecting great things from Sachem. They will never happen.

Re: Middle Country/Sachem School Districts
I live in MCSD, and my husband teaches in the district and it is a good school. It could be a lot worse...in comparision to other districts. It is all what you make of it. It is a very big district though. 3 HS's, 3 MS's and a bunch of elementary schools.

The really ironic thing is that I work with a woman who lives in Smithtown and has a mentally retarded daughter. Smithtown does not have a program to accomodate her, so the district pays for her to go to Sachem's program. Apparently they are given everything they want because Smithtown pays big bucks for her to go out of district...So even within the district, kids are treated so differently.
At any rate, I think we've narrowed our search to limit to Connetquot and exclude Sachem and Middle Country. Connetquot scores and graduation rates seem to be the highest of the three. But of course anything can change in 15 years or whatever when our kids get to high school.

Re: Middle Country/Sachem School Districts
In response to Middle country, I was a gifted student and had special classes, including Japanese in 6th grade. In addition, my younger bro is dyslexic and he also needed additional supports which the district also provided. Overall, we were provded with a great education based on our individual needs.

In all reality, most children with mental retardation, would not be taught in the child's home district today. Many children with more severe disabilities either go to Boces programs or even private placements. The local districts are required to bring many of these students back to district, however they need to create programs for the children. This is a process that takes time and effort. Some districts will just place a child with severe disabilities in a general education classroom because it is easier than creating a program for them. Every district is different and every case is different. And the world of special education will be quite different in the next 10-15 years. Just some more information on the matter.

Re: Middle Country/Sachem School Districts
I would chose Sachem over Middle Country. If you need special services you are going to get them. From my research Middle Country does not have to offer what Sachem does. I went to Sachem, grew up in a neighborhood that is full of children so I have seen what is available. Middle Country SD is a good district,so whatever you chose it will be okay. However I feel that and this is my opinion based on my experience that sachem is better. Yes it is a big school district but one thing I have come across is they have so much to offer their students that other districts do not have. I do agree that a child can get lost, but i am also a firm beliver in you have to a participant in your childs education.

Yeah, she is in a class with 12 students, all mentally retarded and all at her level of ability, 2 from Smithtown out of district, and 10 from Sachem in district. Before starting the Sachem program she was sent to Shoreham-Wading River out of district. Don't know what my point is, but apparently the Sachem program is not up to par unless you get the attention she does as an out of district resident whose home district is paying much higher tuition. I guess it speaks quite highly of Smithtown that they pay so much to get the children in an adequate program instead of trying to put them in a regular classroom.
