The really ironic thing is that I work with a woman who lives in Smithtown and has a mentally retarded daughter. Smithtown does not have a program to accomodate her, so the district pays for her to go to Sachem's program. Apparently they are given everything they want because Smithtown pays big bucks for her to go out of district...So even within the district, kids are treated so differently.
In all reality, most children with mental retardation, would not be taught in the child's home district today. Many children with more severe disabilities either go to Boces programs or even private placements. The local districts are required to bring many of these students back to district, however they need to create programs for the children. This is a process that takes time and effort. Some districts will just place a child with severe disabilities in a general education classroom because it is easier than creating a program for them. Every district is different and every case is different. And the world of special education will be quite different in the next 10-15 years. Just some more information on the matter.
Yeah, she is in a class with 12 students, all mentally retarded and all at her level of ability, 2 from Smithtown out of district, and 10 from Sachem in district. Before starting the Sachem program she was sent to Shoreham-Wading River out of district. Don't know what my point is, but apparently the Sachem program is not up to par unless you get the attention she does as an out of district resident whose home district is paying much higher tuition. I guess it speaks quite highly of Smithtown that they pay so much to get the children in an adequate program instead of trying to put them in a regular classroom.
That's good to know that there is a program out there in a public school. Also good to know about Smithtown because that is the district we are in.
