Re: middle country schools

I went to Jericho, Dawnwood, and Centereach. I liked them well enough and they gave me a good enough education to get into an excellent college. They had good music programs and AP and Honors courses, and decent sports programs. I liked my teachers except they all retired so I'm not sure how the schools are now. They got a horrible report card on Newsday but if your DC(s) are self-motivated and do well in school, it's easy to stand out as a top student.

ETA: I graduated in 1997, my sister graduated in 2001 (went to same schools).

Re: middle country schools

I went to NHS and I think I turned out just fine. Its not the best but I think its far from being the worst.

My daughter is only in Pre-K but they are one of the better Pre-K's around from what I hear.

Re: middle country schools

I worked in the district for a short period of time a few years ago. Like others have said, it's not the best but not the worst. I will say that the Centereach side is a bit better than the Selden side (CHS is run much better than NHS)

you really think so? i went to nhs and it wasnt run the best when i was there (i graduated in 04) but i heard that since i left they have cleaned it up a lot. i always felt like chs was a little bit more "ghetto" (probably not the best word to use)

That's funny. Dh went to NHS and before his brothers went there the schools got rezoned and his bro's ended up going to CHS. They both thought the schools (both NHS and CHS) were okay. I may be wrong. I was in both schools and I always dreaded going to NHS but that was from my perspective. Either way the district as a whole is not the best and not the worst. It definitely has its pros and cons.

Re: middle country schools

DH & I both went there as did all of our siblings. We all went to Selden/Newfield and my cousins went to Dawnwood/Centereach. Some people say Centereach was a bit tougher of a high school, but it was a good school, decent teachers, nothing too out of the ordinary or crazy.

Re: middle country schools

I know the district pretty well and I think it's your basic working middle class neighborhood school district. All in all I'd recommend the district - it's a good district comparable to the others in the area you're looking.

Hope this helps.

My kids go to school on one side of the district and I work in a school on the other side. I'm happy with both sides
