might not be able to remain team green....

So a little background. My sister has Retts syndrome. It's a mutation of the x chromosome, my mother is a carrier( she had 5 other girls with no problems). It's usually a freak mutation, and 99 percent of the children diagnosed are female. There is a 1 percent chance I'm a carrier. If I am a carrier, there is a 1 percent chance the baby could have Retts, considering its a girl.

Doc knew this with my son, and with him being male, he didn't really push for genetic testing.

I did my sono yesterday, and he brought up the subject, just like he did last year. Figuring its protocol, I just listened to what he said. Told him what I knew.

He called today and told me he thinks I should see a genetic specialist. I was totally caught off guard. It's pretty extensive testing, and I'd probably decline if I was having a boy. Are u telling me you think I'm having a girl, doc? (didnt say that, thought it)

Toooooo bad I don't know what I'm having, I wanted a surprise! So, to make our decision easier, we might just find out. My Dh and I need to talk some more, but I was dead set on not finding out.

Just so disappointed about the whole thing. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Can they find out from a CVS/amnio? If all is okay, they don't necessarily have to tell you the gender of the child if that is all that it takes?

Either way, its a tough choice and I'm sorry you're faced with it. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Finding our/not finding out is just fun, it's not important at all.

Rhetts? That is important and I wouldn't think twice about finding out, especially if the gender will make a difference in how you handle additional testing, etc.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: might not be able to remain team green....

Forgive my ignorance, but what would the doctors be able to do if the child came back positive for Rhetts? Is there anything they could do in utero, or would you just be able to prepare to have a handicapped child in the future?

For me, I would decline the testing. Regardless of the results, I would have the child. So it wouldn't do me any good to worry for the next 5 months.

See, I think about this too since I am debating an Amnio because I am over 35.

I wouldn't terminate because of the results but there is a chance that the test could buy peace of mind for the rest of the pregnancy which, if I had concerns about something like Rhetts or Downs, I would think about doing the additional testing because I wouldn't be able to stop worrying until the baby was born-just having the seed planted in my head will cause me to worry for the rest of the pregnancy so I may as well get the testing on the chance that the worrying would end.

I'm sorry that you might not be able to stay team green as you wished.

It would be a no brainer for me though.... I would find out to be able to make the best decisions going forward.

ITA.
im a huge team Chat Icon advocate, but if the sex had to do with the health of the baby i would find out in a second.
you can still find out in a fun, special way, and then have the testing done if its necessary.

Re: might not be able to remain team green....

Yes, finding out the gender is obviously secondary to any health issues.

As for what id do if my child was diagnosed with Rhetts(phone autocorrects to Retts for some reason every time), I'm not totally sure. My mom has been bound to her house for 28 long years. Still changing diapers. Our whole family still pitches in on taking care of our sister. I'm not sure mentally id be able to handle it. I give my mom much credit. Don't flame, I just don't think I'm that tough. Rhetts is a severe disability. My sister has no quality of life. G-tube, trach, Rods in her spine and legs, severe seizures are just some of the issues my sister has.

Being team green was not the important issue, maybe I made it sound that way, it wasnt my intention. Just stinks i have to find out. Then if it is a girl, do all these tests, when the chance is 1 percent, errr. Just a tough spot for me.
