Miley Cyrus: I'm Sorry for Photos
Miley Cyrus issued a statement exclusively to PEOPLE on Sunday, apologizing for a series of playfully provocative photos that circulated on the Internet last week, as well as those from a racy, as-yet unreleased Vanity Fair photo shoot in which she appears to be nude.
The singer, 15, tells PEOPLE: "My goal in my music and my acting is always to make people happy. For Vanity Fair, I was so honored and thrilled to work with Annie [Leibovitz]. I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed."
A source close to the singer tells PEOPLE that Cyrus is clothed but shown by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz in such a way that that the teen appears to be topless.
In the photos that circulated on the Internet, Cyrus, her midriff exposed, is shown draped over the lap of her then-boyfriend, her producer's son. In another image, a hint of a green bra is evident. (Those photos alone prompted criticism from conservative TV commentator Bill O'Reilly, as well as words of support from the Jonas Brothers and a fellow Disney star.)
Cyrus goes on to say: "The pictures of me on the Internet were silly, inappropriate shots. I appreciate all the support of my fans, and hope they understand that along the way I am going to make mistakes and I am not perfect. I never intended for any of this to happen and I am truly sorry if I have disappointed anyone.
"Most of all," she says, "I have let myself down. I will learn from my mistakes and trust my support team. My family and my faith will guide me through my life's journey."
Disney Channel Statement In its own statement about the Vanity Fair story, the Disney Channel, which broadcasts Cyrus's series Hannah Montana, said: "Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines."
Describing the photo session to PEOPLE, a source close to Cyrus reiterated the teen's excitement at working with Leibovitz, and also said of the shoot: "Her parents were there all day. [Father] Billy Ray shot, too."
Though Cyrus's parents left before the final shot, with Miley supposed to be appearing topless, the source said: "Miley's grandmother and her teacher were there when she shot it. Annie convinced them it was going to be artistic. Her parents are mortified. They know this is a learning moment for Miley.
"The photo suggests that she is [naked], but she is not. She is covered by a sheet, and beneath the sheet she is clothed. Originally, she was in a flesh-colored tank top but was asked to remove it."
PEOPLE's requests to Vanity Fair for comment were not answered on Sunday. In a statement to The New York Times, Beth Kseniak, a spokeswoman for both Vanity Fair and Leibovitz, said: "Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day. Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley."

Re: Miley Cyrus: I'm Sorry for Photos
I don't think it is Miley who has to apologize. Where were her parents? Her manager? I don't see how Anne Liebovitz thought these pictures were appropriate for a 15 year old. It was totally irresponsible for all the adults involved. At 15 she was probably in awe of being photographed by a world famous photographer and if she was told they were artistic, then she probably believed it.
That one picture they released is so inappropriate, it is not artistic, it is totally sexual in nature.

Billy Ray was on the set with her and in at least 1 picture:
ETS: Looking at the photo shoot on line at vanityfair.com, it seems the family was with her on the set. One shot has her mom in the background.

You don't think her naked with a sheet covering her and her "bedhead" look is sexual - or maybe I should rephrase - that it would be interpereted as sexual by people who shouldn't be looking at a 15 year old that way?

I agree with this.
As for the one with the blanket- I don't see the big deal. It reminds me more of my daughter after her bath than something sexual.

Re: Miley Cyrus: I'm Sorry for Photos
Inappropriate photo.
And I think that was the intention. Look at all the attention this will bring to her.
It's partly because of who she is - a teenybopper who tween girls want to be like - that makes it more inappropriate. Because the truth is I'm sure there have been similar shoots done with scrawny, scantily clad 15 yr old runway models that don't get 1/10th of the attention this gets.
But because she is Hannah Montana, that makes this that much more "controversial". Come on now, they aren't stupid, they knew exactly what they were shooting.

Re: Miley Cyrus: I'm Sorry for Photos
Such a lack of parenting IMO-I would never let my daughter pose like that or even "appear" to be sensual at such a young age. I suspect she is going to be a trainwreck-regardless of having so called grounded parents.

Re: Miley Cyrus: I'm Sorry for Photos
i think people are just looking for something bad about her. the media and everyone else can't just realize that maybe a 15 year old celebrity can actually be somewhat normal. so she showed her middle and her back. it's in vanity fair, not seventeen. teenagers don't look at that magazine.
i don't see anything wrong with the photos..i just really think people are trying their hardest to find something NOT normal, so they can talk about her negatively.

Re: Miley Cyrus: I'm Sorry for Photos
Greedy, greedy greedy.
As if she wasnt making enough money and succeeding at distancing herself from all the other trashy hollywood girls - britney, paris etc, they just had to go and do this.
I think the pic of her with the sheet is totally inappropriate for her age and the one with her dad way too creepy - they look like boyfriend and girlfriend. another role model gone down the greedy "strike it while the iron is hot" path.

Re: Miley Cyrus: I'm Sorry for Photos
That photo is very inappropriate for a 15 year old.
Would anyone here want their 15 year old daughter posing like that period, let alone, in a national publication?
Shame on her parents.

Re: Miley Cyrus: I'm Sorry for Photos
I am LOL @ the press release about the photos being 'artistic' and that they deliberately manipulated a 15 year old??? Really? A 15 year old who is a multi millionaire with the capability to continue to make lots of money for many people has NO ONE looking out for her interests or helping her make decisions? I'm sorry but I find that very hard to believe. They try to make it sound like it's an average 15 year old from the suburbs who someone took advantage of. I call BS on this one.
As far as the actual photos that I have seen (the ones posted here) - The photos are inappropriate IMO - why why why would they do this? She was/is on track to continue to be a "G rated role model" for young girls..why screw that up intentionally? Even the pic with her father, see how her hips are provacatively shown and turned towards the camera? Why do they need to do a shot like that?

thats exactly the point. If she was 25, there would be no issues. But at 15 it is inappropriate.

Re: Miley Cyrus: I'm Sorry for Photos
Annie L. is supposed to be the greatest photographer, etc. etc. yet all she could think to do with a 15-year old girl was have her naked with a sheet over her. Give me a break. They purposely sexualized this child to sell the mag. I could think of a million beautiful cute things they could have done instead.

Re: Miley Cyrus: I'm Sorry for Photos
From the mouth of a babe: As I was getting ready for work this morning Channel 2 had a story on Miley and the pics. My 7 year old said MOMMY MILEY IS NAKED. So that summed it all up for me exactly how some of her young fans may interpret the pictures.
