Milk allergy and lactose intolerance

I know these are two different things... I was born with a milk allergy but was lucky to grow out of it sometime in elementary school.

Now I'm thinking Im having issues again and not sure if it's a milk protein allergy or lactose intolerance. Can this be figured out with a simple blood test?

I was tested for milk allergy/lactose by drinking two glasses of whole milk and blowing into these special bags every half hour. I honestly don't know how they test it that way, but there is something in your breath that indicates how high/low your numbers are.

I hope that makes sense.

Wow, that sounds easier than a blood test! Chat Icon Thanks! I'm gonna find out about this.

Re: Milk allergy and lactose intolerance

My sister had this test as well.

I found out I was lactose intolerant by cutting out all dairy and all of the sudden I was cured!

Then had some cereal with milk and I was sick again.

This was as per my PCP at the time. He was lactose intolerant and didn't think it was fair to have someone with the intolerance drink dairy and then suffer for hours after if the test is positive.

I'm thankful he didn't make me do the test. I would have had to wear diapers! lol

Me too. That's an easier way to do it. Eat no dairy for 2 days. None - not even milk in your coffee. See if you feel better. Then on the third day, drink a glass of milk. See if you get sick. You'll have your answer.

BTW, lactose intolerance is really common in some ethnic groups (as high as 75%-90% in some) and is not related to a milk allergy.

Re: Milk allergy and lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance is as simple to test for as the other posters have explained. An allergy would manifest itself very differently!

I would add this: some times, after being sick to one's stomach (food poisoning, a "stomach bug", etc), we need to give our intestinal tract sufficient time to heal. This frequently entails staying away from dairy for as much as a month until we "heal" or else we can develop a life-long sensitivity to it.

Stay away from dairy altogether for a while, then come back to it, and see how you do. I am presently on almond milk (the kind in the refrigerated section, not the shelf) in the hopes I can have dairy again. I use it for my cappuccinos and everything! I do miss dairy though, but I know giving my tummy a rest is essential.

I'm late to comment here, but I can tell you the difference. I'm allergic to dairy and my husband is lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance causes gas, gas pain, cramping, and diarrhea. An allergy causes stomach pain and nausea, and can cause inflammation that can manifest as throat swelling (so food gets stuck easily), acne, and eczema.

Yup

Also my skin will react if I touch milk. When i'm baking christmas cookies I break out hardcore

ETA With lactose intolerance it's a digestion issue. you lack the enzume to digest it, so it's all digestion related symptoms, wheras an allergy is going to be inflammation.
