Milk and Soy allergy - looking for answers
My son has a severe allergy to milk and soy. He is 8 months old and we are on soild foods. I am reading these labels and don't really know what to look for. Besides the basic Milk and Soy how else are these listed on the ingredients. Also can anyone suggested what brands their little ones enjoied. I am very confused and looking for some support in dealing with this allergy. (this is how I truely feel...)

For the milk allergy you have to avoid foods with the ingredients whey or casein. As far as soy I'm not sure if it's listed under anything other than soy. I will tell you that A LOT of food contains soy so just want to offer you some 's as that is definitely a difficult allergy. I found aside from the fruits and veggies it was less stressful to make her food from scratch so I knew exactly what went into it. Now I can spot a dairy ingredient from a mile away!
Here's a website I used as a reference

Re: Milk and Soy allergy - looking for answers
You can't go by the bold part on the label that says "Contains milk, soy, peanut" The US labeling laws allow for A LOT of loopholes and they can hide allergens in the list and not mark the item as containing an allergen. For example, my son is allergic to dairy. Manufacturers can hide milk in their product under "Natural flavor" or "artificial flavor" and not state that the product contains milk.
This is a link to the list of ingredients to avoid from the Food Allergy and Anaphalyxis Network It's going to look VERY overwhelming right now, but it will get easier. I carry a copy in my wallet and have on on our fridge but rarely have to look at it any more. I don't give my son anything on the list including the things that "might" contain milk since it's not worth risking a reaction to me.
I find that the organic food companies offer more things that my son (dairy allergic) can eat than the traditional companies can.
GL! Feel free to FM me if you have questions or just want to vent.
