I am so sorry. Try to get to an unemployment office in the next week, once you figure things out. I was too proud to do this when I got laid off, but 6 months later I went to the office. Best decision I made!
Also, Healthy NY was a lifesaver for me for health insurance. It's pretty darn cheap. Please FM me if you'd like to talk more!

This happened to me. I got laid off when they closed my office. Thankfully I did see it coming, so I had already had 2 interviews at my current job.
Things like this tend to work out. I know its hard to see now, but sometimes like things like this happen for the best. You will find a better job that suits you better, with better pay and/or better benefits.

I just recently had the same thing happen to me after 5 years working for a small company.
I know how it feels.
I thought b/c I made the bulk of the money we couldn't get by- but 2 months later and we are doing OK and I know this happened for a reason so I can spend more time with DC and my family.

The company is too small so they don't fall under cobra.
The company i was working for had about 7 employees & when one of the guys left he was able to get cobra.

They are not required by law to offer COBRA if they have less than 20 employees. If they do let you continue on the health plan, my guess is you will be paying a huge amount of a month, unless they are also covered under Health Care NY too. Participating in their plan helps them. I think you may be better off collecting unemployment & focusing on interviewing rather than working as a subcontractor for them. I could see you easily getting roped into the same work minus benefits.
Look under the individual plans for Health Care NY / Child - it's run by the state & is highly subsidized.

I've learned that anything is possible when you get laid off. If you try to negotiate all they can do is tell you no. The last two times I got laid off I was pg, so i'm not sure if they were more inclined to agree to my requests for fear of us suing. The second time I got laid off the company paid for my health insurance for a year at no cost to me. When I got laid off last year the company let me keep my health insurance and I just paid the premium that they were taking out of my pay check. I was 5 months pg kept it until the baby was 3 months old.
