Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
Is this Health? Relationships? Parenting??
God Knows! So here I go:
Discussed with my OB/GYN about going on Mirena. Anyone have any experience with Mirena? Did the procedure to place Mirena hurt?
And, this is the big question, a friend of mine told me that he had dated a girl who had an IUD -- HE WAS NOT SURE WHICH ONE, so it may NOT have been Mirena -- and that when he had sex with this girl he could feel it and it hurt him. Anyone have any experience with that??
I am planning on seeing my doc again next week to ask these new questions but I wanted feedback from real women with real men in their lives to give me the lowdown on all this mishegas!
TIA!

Re: Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
I have experience with the paraguard. DH initially felt it A LOT. Said it didn't hurt but it felt weird. Went to get strings trimmed and he doesn't feel it anymore. Maybe once every couple of months.

Re: Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
Also, with the pain - doc gave me something to slightly dialate me on date of procedure. It was uncomfortable (like a pap smear) but didn't hurt me. What killed me was the cramping afterwards for the day. Be prepared. I had the day off from work and was in bed the rest of the day. Lol.

It's non-hormonal.

Re: Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
Hmmmm - OK so the Mirena has these strings as well.
And the term Paraguard just refers to the fact that the Mirena has no hormones...
OK, I'm sorry, I am just a little clueless lol but I think I get it now.
Maybe I'll just tell him make the strings short from word go??

Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
Had Mirena...for me it was painful to insert...definitely made me climb the wall.
Started hemorrhaging a few weeks later. Had to go in for sonograms to find the Mirena and make sure it didn't break through my uterine wall. No sign of it so my body apparently pushed it out..contractions and bleeding lasted a long time due to my body having a foreign object...had to take clot pills. Honestly I would never ever do it again. I'm much happier with the NuvaRing and being able to skip periods.

Re: Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
Damn
I'm sorry that happened to you.
I had the Nuva Ring for a few years and then, out of nowhere, it started giving me yeast infections. It was awful. I'm sad because until then, it was great.
The pills suuuuck for me.
I feel like I don't have a lot of options.
And we can't keep doing the pull and pray.
Bah

Re: Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
I have Mirena and have no complaints. It was very uncomfortable for maybe 30 seconds getting it put in, but I had cramping for a few days afterwards. I've had it for 7 months and I had some spotting until last month, but now it's gone. I had no options other than this or the depo shot and my dr. highly recommended it. She has it herself, as do a few of the nurses there. They all liked it and recommended trying it even if I don't plan on keeping it for the full 5 years. My dh has never mentioned feeling it at all.

This happened to someone I know. I am so scared to have this now. Why do all the birth control options suck??

Re: Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
I have had it for 4 years next month and plan on having a new one put in next year. The Mirena has hormones and stays in for 5 years. Paraguard has none and stays in for 10 years. After about 6 months of having it I no longer get my period just spot here and there. When I had it placed I cramped after but with some motrin it was fine. The hubs swore he felt it so I had the strings trimmed. No complaints!

Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
My best friend has it, well she did, I guess you can say. She went recently to have it removed and they could not find it. She now lives in the UK where the medical sysyem is not as great as ours. She has to wait until Sept to go to the hospital to get a sono to see where it is. I don't know if she felt for it every month after her period or not like you are supposed. I've heard nothing but horror stories with it. There was on recently on FB floating around that I will paste here for you.
"UPDATED 7/9/2015 I want everyone to share this please. My husband wanted me to share this story to possible save the next young girl that decides to get this nasty thing! On March 29,2015 6 weeks after giving birth to my daughter, I was pushed into getting the mirena birth control (iud), bc it helps controls bleeding ( I have a blood disorder Von Willabrands Disease) & it's good for 5 years! After getting it I had Viginal bleeding, hair loss, weight gain, headaches, severe stomach pain, and depression, memory loss, and other symptoms. After a office visit & numerous office calls my doctor & nurses said its all normal & to just try it for 90 days! On June 23rd I went to have the mirena removed because I couldn't take the side effects any longer. The doctor wanted me to just take medicine to control the symptoms I denied as I thought if you had to be on medicine just to control your birth control issues something is wrong. We proceeded the exam to have it mirena IUD. The doctor could reach the strings to remove it but it wouldn't come. I went across the hall over for ultrasound to locate it which revealed that it was embedded in Myometrium and would have to be surgically removed. On Wednesday July 1st I went in for my 1st surgery to have the mirena removed which was only suppose to take 30-60 minutes. After 3 hours I came out with the mirena still embedded in me. The doctor went through my uterus and went thru my belly button & stomach to try to get to the IUD. The doctors couldn't get it bc I started bleeding heavily & they didn't have blood on stand by. On Thursday July 9th I went to meet a new surgeon who advised me I will be going through another surgical procedure in the next upcoming weeks. The new surgeon thinks he can rip it out. If I hemorrhage or if by any chance he cannot get it to come out I will be having a hysterectomy. At the age of 22 that is devastating to me. If you are thinking the mirena as your birth control I hope you rethink you decision as it destroyed my life. Thank you to each & everyone of you who took time to share, read, or just simply warning someone else about it. I know some people love it & have had no trouble, but remember you could always be just that one person like me"

Re: Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
I tired paraguard. Was uncomfortable going in, but not unbearable. I took Motrin before my appt.
When I went back 3 weeks later to be checked it was not in place and had to be removed.
Back on the pill, still thinking about other options.

Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
I have had the paraguard (no hormone version of mirena) for about a year. TMI- periods are a little long but otherwise zero complaints with it. Very slight pinch when they inserted it but no pain after.
I did have depo years ago (like college)and I liked how easy it was but I gained A LOT of weight from it- 20 pounds in a two month time period so I stopped using it and my weight did go back to normal. Not sure if they've changed anything since I had it way back

OK ---- so what's the depo shot??
It's Depo-Provera - a BC Shot you get once every 12 weeks.
There is something called Nexaplon that is this tiny stick that is inserted into the underside of your Arm and is good for 3 years.
I have no personal experience with either or with Mirena.
For me I am not a fan of any of the options out there but when I was on it was on the pill with no issues. I took a generic low dose pill for 10 years without any side affects.

Re: Mirena - Feedback? Experiences?
OK so my issue with the pills I tried was bloating -- and like a little weight gain.
So doc suggested this because of the absence of estrogen, which is what he said is causing the bloat.
So, I looked into low or no estrogen pills and LOESTRIN came up --
Anyone have feedback on that??

Because it SUCKSSSS being a woman. I am waiting for menopause!
Honestly, the contraceptive gel that you insert with the pre filled applicators coupled WITH pull and pray works like a charm. And no side effects.

Use the Contraceptol gel in the prefilled applictor WITH the pull and pray Works great. I only got pregnant ONCE in my whole life (and that's because we tried) and I have NEVER been on any other form of BC
