mirena
anyone know anything about this...a girl at work is getting it inserted...
Its a form of birthcontrol...they stick a small platic "t" looking thing into your uterus (its not consider an iud)
It stays there for 5 yrs...or you could have it removed sooner...if you want to ttc....
Its supposedly the next best thing to having your tubes tied...no weight gain, no moodiness...and its more effective than iuds and the pill...
I was thinking about doing this and just having it removed in the next 2 or so years....But im wondering if it decreases your chances of become preg again, and of course of it hurting..

Re: mirena
Mirena IS an IUD. But, it also contains hormones unlike the other IUD, Paraguard.
I was going to get the Paraguard and my Dr talked me out of it (for now) because there is a small small chance that it can affect your fertility later on. In most circumstances, however, your fertility is supposed to return immediately upon removal, and you can remove it any time before the 5 years.
My aunt who was an OB-GYN and is now a Pediatric Neurologist used it after her first. She had it removed approximately 2 years later and conceived her son within 3 months. She is over 40. I think she used the Paraguard though, not Mirena.

Re: mirena
I have 2 friends who had them but got pregnant because they fellout. They can become dislodged without you knowing it, yo have ot check for the string periodically. But...I have heard it is pretty good, the only draw back is some women have heavier more painful periods, that is why I didn't get it, my periods are heavy and painful as it is I can't afford to be out of commission with 3 kids.

Re: mirena
My friend got it & like Emilains friends hers started to fall out. She ended up having it removed.
Have you though about going on a low doasge pill? I always ask my docotr for the lowest dosage that won't get me pregnant. He prescribed Loestrin & I had no reactions to it.

Re: mirena
IUS is an InterUterine System. It's still an IUD but classified as a system since it combines the IUD concept with a low doseage hormone.
I just had one put in right after X-mas. It's much to early to speak of how effective it is for me, but I can tell you the insertion was absolutely not a pinch of pain for me. I was actually surprised how easy it was. I don't feel anything right now either. I do have spotting now, which is common for the first three months. This IUD is not one to typically cause heavier periods (as the copper IUD) and in fact, a lot of woman have no period at all. You do have to check for the strings and go back to the gyno to check for placement and no issues.
Fertility relies on so many factors, but in a perfect world, this shouldn't affect it at all.
Your Dr should be able to consult you on your questions and help you decide if it's right for you.

Nancy explained it but yes, it's still an intrauterine device (IUD). They are comparing it to a non-hormonal IUD on the chart. It ranks higher because it also uses hormones to stop ovulation (I believe).
The way I see it is, if you are already inserting a foreign object into your uterus to prevent pg, why also use hormones? Double the protection, I suppose. The reason I wanted an IUD in the first place was so that I wouldn't have to remember a pill and for the added benefit of no hormones.
I decided to give the NuvaRing a shot for now. Three weeks with nothing to remember to take (like the pill or the patch).

Re: mirena
I had both types of IUD and it is VERY rare (less than 5%) that it begins to expell on its own. Both of mine did..but again it is VERY rare. A friend of mine who is an OB said that most of the OBs she knows use it as birth control beause it is very, very effective, painfree and easy to use (no remembering, etc..).
The hormones that are used are a lot less than then in a pill, patch or ring.
I would rec'd an IUD to anyone who wanted to put off pregnancy for 2 years or more.

Re: mirena
If I wasn't BFing I would be back on Nuvaring in a heartbeat. That was the best BC ever, at least for me.
I am still considering the IUD since I am BFing but right now am still undecided since we may TTC next January.

It actually doesn't stop ovulation. The mini-pill and the progesterone on the IUD causes your disharge to be thick to help immobilize sperm and causes your your uterus to have a thin lining making implantation difficult.

Thanks, I wasn't sure!
