Miscarriage? Ectopic Pregnancy? Totally normal?
I'm in my 5th week, just about to start my 6th, and I woke up last night with some pretty bad lower right hand side abdominal pain that radiated around my hip and into the lower back. I have never felt anything like this, it was soooo painful. I did end up going to the bathroom (sorry for TMI), but also noticed some very little spotting. I (of course) immediately thought I was miscarrying and started crying, but the pain went away and I was able to get back to sleep. This morning, no blood what so ever, but the pain is still there, just very dull, very mild. I should preface this with saying that I took another test earlier in the night last night, and it did come back positive (for some reason, I just can't believe it actually keeps coming back positive). This is my first pregnancy, so I'm very confused as to what's normal and what to call the doc about immediately. My first apt with the doc isn't until week 9 or 10 because she waits until the 8th week to see you. My husband is suggesting waiting a day and see how I feel.
Any ideas????

Your uterus is stretching. It's completely normal but being a FTM myself I live by the rule "if I'm worried, I call". No matter how many girls tell you it's normal on the boards, you really won't feel comfortable until you speak to a doctor. I called my doctor for pains and spotting. Luckily my sister is an OB so I had her to call (lucky for me, not so lucky for her).
I hope it eases your mind just a little to know that it's completely normal what you are feeling. As long as it's not heavy cramping with heavy bleeding (like changing your pad) then you are ok.

I had spotting in the 5th week but no pain just some pulling. Call the doctor. Mine had me go in right away. They did an ultra sound to make sure the sac is in the uterus and not the tube. I am at week 14 thing are fine. Lots of prayers for you.

I know that dull pain on one side is very common, i had it with all 3 pregnancies. Spotting is common too, but the radiating pain to your lower back would concern me. I'd call your doctor's office and tell them that you have the radiating pain to your back and they will probably have you come in to get checked out. Hope you feel better!

The thing that worried me the most is that this was severe enough to wake me up. Even when I had gallstones, I never felt pain like that nor did I wake up from pain. I better call the doc, I'll give the office a little time to open up and settle in for the day before calling and bugging them.

I had cramping pain and spotting around week 7. The cramps woke me up. I called. I didn't go in they just asked me questions and then assured me it was likely fine. I am also in week 14 and baby looks good! Good luck!

Miscarriage? Ectopic Pregnancy? Totally normal?
Just got off the phone with the office, they are sending me for blood work first, since I'm still so early, I guess just to confirm the pregnancy. They said it might not be anything but a ruptured cyst. So we shall see. Thanks all for the support!!!

Re: Miscarriage? Ectopic Pregnancy? Totally normal?
It could be totally nothing.....But honestly since I had an ectopic, I feel the need to share because you just NEVER know...the night I was exactly 6 weeks I had intense pain in my left side, radiating to the back...it got so intense that we drove to the ER. They suspected ectopic, then the pain went away. They sent me home thinking it was a cyst that ruptured (another cause of intense pain on one side) and they couldn't locate anything in my uterus but my beta was positive. (in the 600's).
2 weeks later I was having emergency surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy. Sure enough baby had implanted in my tube...my tube did not rupture because the baby actually miscarried in the tube and stopped growing (a blessing in disguise as bizarre as that sounds).
In MOST cases with ectopic, the pain gets worse and worse till it ruptures but mine was a bit different. Chances are you are fine, but please get a sono...better safe than sorry. God forbid it was ectopic, you are early enough to catch it without having to have a tube removed (in most earlier ectopic cases though sometimes they have to do that as well). I only share my story because I went through it and it was the last thing I expected! Good luck!!

I just replied to you but wanted to add...cysts are so common and it sounds like it could be that! I had one with this pregnancy actually, it's a corpus luteum cyst...we all have them when we get pregnant (the cyst supports the pregnancy until the placenta takes over). Sometimes they rupture..harmless but can be very very painful. I thought I was having another ectopic and was scared out of my mind but nope, just the cyst.

Miscarriage? Ectopic Pregnancy? Totally normal?
The pain was sooo bad last night, but now it's really dull, just like if I ran too much the day before, or slept on my hip weird. Before, if I felt this I would just say, ok I'll stretch it out at the gym later. I am skipping the gym tonight, that's for sure. thanks for the info!!! I really appreciate it. I am nervous about ectopic because I know prior abdominal surgery can be related and I had my gallbladder removed laproscopically 8 years ago, so like you said, you never know.

I'm sure it's nothing bad at all...i just wanted to share the story just in case..especially if the pain comes back badly at any point, I'd advise a trip to the ER just to rule out anything. I should add i had bad bad spotting from day one of that pregnancy and just knew something was "off". The experience was tough, but I was "lucky" in the end and I knew better what to look for for the future. Luckily i got pg the month after surgery and all was great :)

Miscarriage? Ectopic Pregnancy? Totally normal?
Thanks again! This is the first time I've even spotted - otherwise I probably would never have even taken a test if I had spotted last week. It was just funny as just 4 or 5 hours earlier I took another test (since I'm stupid and needed to see it again) and it showed pregnant.

I would remain calm and call your doctor. Otherwise it can be completely normal.

i dont want to scare you as im not a DR but want you to see the full picture.
even if you had an ecptoic or a mc, you would still test positive on a test for some time. the tests dont tell you you have a healthy baby, they test for your hormone levels. even if you had a loss, or a sub-normal pg, your levels would still be above zero.
not trying to scare you, but dont want you thinking your + test after pain puts you in the clear.
on the other side, people miscarry without spotting or pain so thats not a definate either.
since you are so early, unfortunatley you are most likely going to have to play the waiting game. wait a few more weeks so for a sono to see a sac or something.
sorry but i want you to hear all sides

If your pain is bad enough to stop you in your tracks, and your having vag bleeding, I think that warrants a call to the dr and possibly a sono. Good luck!!!

Spotting is totally normal in some pregnancies, but my first pregnancy I was spotting and cramping and ended up miscarrying. So while it could be nothing- it is better to be safe than sorry. Now I am pregnant again and almost 13 weeks and haven't spotted once. Definitely call your doc and try to get a sono just to be sure. Fingers crossed for you that everything is OK!

Re: Miscarriage? Ectopic Pregnancy? Totally normal?
I know they did bloodwork, but if you still have the pain, I'd insist on a sono to be sure the pregnancy is in the uterus. My SIL had an ectopic, and it burst at 9 weeks. If you're having pain now, waiting til 8 weeks is too long IMO.

BW #1 is done, they want me to repeat in 2 days. Pain just sort of feels like gas pain now - just annoying nothing really painful. If it gets bad again or I see more spotting I am definitely calling again and bugging them.

Just have to add, that since I got home all that gas has been coming out and I feel a million times better. Still concerned (of course) but not freaking out like I was before. We'll see what all the tests show! Thanks for all the info ladies. Right now I'm going with my doctor's initial thought of the cyst (who knew about that BEFORE they were pregnant????)

I would give it a day and see how you feel. Newly pregnant women spot for a number of reasons. I would monitor and call the dr if your spotting becomes red.
