Missing the point?
Staying home was meant to slow down the curve, not prevent us from getting coronavirus. Most of us are destined to get it.
I am reading these posts and I think a lot of people think that by staying home for months they may avoid getting it. That was never the point. The point was not to overwhelm the hospitals with everyone getting it at once.
At some point, life must resume. I think we've survived the initial influx, which was less than expected (yes, probably because of mitigation). In the next 2-3 weeks businesses will/should reopen.
The truth: You will probably get this, be at least exposed to it or have already had it.

Re: Missing the point?
Yep I agree with you. People think if we just stay home long enough the virus will be gone. Gone from the earth. I see all these people saying things like- when Corona virus is gone, I'm going to do this, or that. It's not going to be gone. Ever. It's not going to be one day- 18 months from now- that we can all come out all at once and resume normal activity.

Missing the point?
Well I think it's a mixed point. People are staying home not to get Covid because we need to stop the rush on the hospitals. Staying home is not going to stop the virus and I know schools are already preparing for what they are told ist he next wave, sometime in November. The whole point to closing everything was to make sure the hospitals can handle the cases but I guess the secodardy point is also not to get it. I firmly believe that this virus was around for quite a while. I am positive my daughter had it in December and I am even more positive my mom had it in January. She was hospitalized for labored breathing due to RSV, which I found very odd. The hospital told her they were having multiple older people being diagnosed with RSV that month which is not the norm. I think they didn't know what Covid was yet.

Re: Missing the point?
People are most definitely missing the point in fact MOST of those I talk to feel like we should stay home “until this goes away.” That isn’t how it works. If it did magically disappear by staying home then they wouldn’t be talking about the “second wave”!! Most people WILL get the virus at some point, that is inevitable and people have to accept that.

-Not to overwhelm the hospitals. They’ll actually be a bed if you have to go.
-To hopefully have multiple medications that help shorten the virus giving less severe symptoms (like what tamiflu does for the flu for some)
I’ve been saying this to those I speak to who are in complete panic. We will all get it at some point (if we haven’t had it already). Just have to hope you don’t get it while there’s complete chaos. I’d feel a little more hopeful if I get it after multiple drugs are proven and hospitals aren’t completely overrun by the virus.
Really hoping cuomo doesn’t just push us back another 2 - 4 weeks as May 15th approaches. I’m not so sure he won’t do it.

I predict that he will not start easing restrictions until sometime in June. Italy has slowly started easing some restrictions, and will ease more on May 4th. Some European countries are starting to send children back to school. If they can succeed at keeping the virus "below the curve", then there is more hope for us. But I think Cuomo is one of the biggest people missing this point. If he waits for cases & deaths to be at 0, forget it. Yesterday he really angered me.

Re: Missing the point?
completely agree. flattening the curve just pushes it out further... same number of individuals getting it, just not all at the same time... making the whole thing last longer, but allowing us (the medical community) to handle them instead of drowning in it.
i wish we could make it go away. but that's just it... a wish.
there is someone i work with who was hospitalized in december with all the symptoms people talk about. i seriously believe he had it and i was exposed to it (maybe in some small degree, since our shifts overlap by only 2 hours).

My grandmother was hospitalized in January for labored breathing due to RSV. Thank God she’s back home and healthy now but it was so scary. The doctors and nurses were surprised that she had RSV but said since she’s elderly her immune system is like a young baby’s. That’s so interesting that your mom had it also. I bet they were both misdiagnosed. I pray that your mom is better now.

I've been saying this for a while. I'm assuming I'll get it eventually, but I'm hoping to hold out until they have more knowledge, and more medications/treatments for it.

Re: Missing the point?
I don't think Cuomo's intent was to anger anyone. There were guidelines given by the White House on reopening in phases. New York is no wear near what it would require at this moment to start phase one. I am sure he will follow these guidelines. I think what is getting missed is that if we open up before these guidelines are met hospitals do not have the capacity to handle all the people that will get sick. Following these guidelines give us a way of making sure that doesn't happen.

Missing the point?
I'm not staying home just to flatten the curve. I'm also staying home to give researchers time to find medicines that will actually help once someone is bad enough that they have to go to the hospital. Right now - there's a lot of testing that has to be done to know what will work. And were just now finding out about other issues related to COVID - it's not just respiratory, it's also heart, blood clots, etc. The longer we let them do their research, the easier it'll be when the rest of us get it.

Yes I was going to say something similar to this. They have no idea what long-term affects people are going to have from this...long term respiratory issues, kidney failure, neurological issues.
When my job needs me to go back obviously I have to go...along with my kid’s school. But you won’t see me at a movie, concert, baseball game anytime soon.

I agree.
And people have missed the point from the beginning. The purpose of this exercise is flattening the curve. Not to eliminate the virus.
Yes - it is also buying more time but, once we start getting back to normal slowly), this coronavirus will still exist.

Re: Missing the point?
What funkybutt and Katareen said. Plus, it is looking like getting it once doesn't make you long term immune. Like the way we need flu shots every year and boosters. So it's not like the people who get it get it over with. The clock just starts running until they are susceptible again. No benefit.. just long term damage.
Not everyone will get it. Not everyone will get it the same number of times. Best to avoid for as long as possible. Vaccines, treatments, and insights may not be around the corner...but if you listen to the scientists ...they're coming. And they will make this bearable and less deadly for everyone.
If people want to rush back into the fire ...they will. But if you listen to the real experts, buying time before you get it is always better. I feel like these days, everyone thinks they're an epidemiologist. I am certainly not, but I listen to real experts, refuse to be fatigued from acting in my own and society's best interest after a month, and firmly believe that as with smallpox, polio, sars, etc, that came before, this will get better in some way.
Finally, folks are right. Those who stay in will not be infected by people who go to gyms and nail places. But healthcare workers will. .

But Funkybutt with all due respect, by your own admission, you stated you are still seeing your boyfriend and his family. I think it’s fine. I’m sure they are re isolating as well. I’m just saying I am tired of people with near ideal “isolation” situations telling the rest of us how much better you are then me. I haven’t seen my boyfriend in two months because we aren’t isolating together (which is an oxymoron). My point is ppl are already making their own accommodations and deciding what they can bear and what they feel is acceptable. But judging others who do the same.
Everyone who gets to go to bed with their partner at night - I am no longer interested in their thoughts about “isolation”

True - and I get your point. Every time you open your circle, you're taking a chance. In my case, it's basically the same as married people - we just live in 2 separate houses. But the issue comes with our kids - who are they coming in contact with once they go to the other parent's house. I almost broke up with my boyfriend of a year bc he let his 5 year old play with a kid down the street. I take it VERY seriously b/c my son has asthma, but I also know that I can't really control everything. And if I hear of people that have been seeing multiple people, then I don't see them b/c I can't take that risk.
I don't feel like I criticize others for their choices - other than the people that are protesting to open everything right now.

Seriously?! I get to go to bed with my husband who is an essential worker and I worry every single day that he may catch this and bring it home. He has severe asthma. This is after working from 7am until midnight or later to finish my work since I spend a good part of my day assisting my kindergartener with her 4+ hours of school. I haven’t been out of my house except for walks and Covid testing since 3/16. Everyone is struggling. If you want to see your boyfriend then make accommodations and make peace with the risk which in the worst case scenario is death.

I phrased it poorly. I meant I don’t want to be lectured about isolation by people who aren’t in actual isolation. Isolation is painful. Prayers for your husbands continued safety.

Yes. We were told this was for the hospital system, not to overwhelm, gather PPE, meds, ventilators, etc. So now we are being told it's for testing, for the numbers to be x, before we are allowed to go back into society. We will alll have to face this virus eventually. We can't destroy the economy and hide in our houses for 18 months, etc. I rather take my chances (for myself or my family) than live that miserable life.

But the testing will give us an idea of when we can start to open things up without once again overwhelming the (still overwhelmed) hospital system. It's not just a matter of emptying hospital beds. We have to be smart about how we do this so we do not have another situation where there is not enough PPE, medical equipment and medical personnel are not drowning with the amount of work they have to do etc. In a "bad" flu season, the hospitals run at over capacity, generally. This is a whole other animal. We are now in a better place to understand what hospitals need to have available if/when there is a second wave, and beyond that. We have learned some, and are learning more every day, how to be better prepared. So, yes, it's a combination of many things that need to happen before we can have our "new normal" in place.
