Mom who lost girls in Taconic crash is pregnant

Jackie Hance, whose three young daughters were killed in the Taconic State Parkway crash, is pregnant, the Floral Park woman reveals in a first-person Ladies' Home Journal article.

Hance said she became pregnant through in vitro fertilization about a year and a half after her children died in a crash caused by her sister-in-law, Diane Schuler, who authorities say was drunk and high when she drove the wrong way on the Taconic. Schuler, her 2-year-old daughter and three Yonkers men were also killed.

Hance's baby is due in the fall, she said.

"I want to be excited, but I know how random life can be, and how unfair. However much we try to protect our children, the worst can happen," Hance wrote. "Every day all I want is to be reunited with my girls again in heaven. But Emma, Alyson, and Katie have other plans for me right now."

Hance wrote that she still struggles with the idea that Schuler -- "the most responsible person I knew" -- was responsible for her daughter's deaths.

"How does a person go from being like a sister to me -- adored by my girls and cherished by my husband -- to being the one who ruined our lives?" Hance wrote. "How could this person I trusted completely have done something so unthinkable that I couldn't -- and still can't -- wrap my head around it? I pray every day that there is another explanation. To not have any answers is torture. I don't know how to describe that pain."

I was glad to hear they are expecting. I wish them the best. I can't imagine the pain and heartache they have been through.

I just saw this article on newsday. Made me sob just reading it. I can't imagine what they went through- and am so happy that they have the strength to get pregnant again.

I had just heard this on the radio. I'm so happy for them. I know it has to be bittersweet but I hope they can find some happiness with their new little one.

I read this article in LHJ the other day and have not stopped thinking about it. This tragedy happened just a few weeks after I had DD in 2009 and I just could not imagine the pain of these parents. I wish them joy in their new little one and hope they continue to heal. Jackie Hance seems like a class act and a wonderful mother to her children. God bless them all.

I just read it. I can't stop crying. I was just going to post this link as well. I just can't fathom their pain and loss.

What suprised me was this:

And we'd been hit with another shock: The relatives of two of the people who died in the SUV were bringing a lawsuit against Warren. The car Diane drove was my minivan, which was registered in Warren's name. By some horrible irony, Warren could be taken to court. While everything that mattered was already gone, everything that remained could still be taken.


I don't know- I mean I know those people are grieving too- but how can you sue Warren over this? Yes, it was his minivan, but he wasn't driving it- he had nothing to do with it. Hasn't this poor man suffered enough?
I just don't think I could do that to get a pay out.
It won't bring anyone back.

OMG my heart hurt reading that article. Especially this part:

"Then a few months ago Warren and I drove back to the doctor's office. I'd had a dream that I was standing in heaven and I could see Emma, Alyson, and Katie through these big gates. God would not let me inside the gates. He said that I had been given a gift from that doctor and I had to use his gift before I could be with my babies. So, almost in a daze, I told the doctor I wanted to try to get pregnant, never expecting it to work. I got pregnant the very first time. "

The strength some people have is amazing.

I seem to recall reading that in the Journal News too. If Warren Hance had ANY idea his sister would do that, no way would he have let her take his children. I feel for that other family too but it's unfair to put any blame on him. It's cruel and greedy and hope a judge throws that part out.

This just gave me chills and tears. I am so happy for them. I wish they never had to go through what they did, but am happy that they are getting a gift back.
