Mommies that use CIO....
We have successfully been doing CIO for some time now. DS is almost 20 months old. For the past three weeks we have also taken his last night time bottle away. How many of your DCs still cry/whine almost every single night when you leave the room? And for how long? I just find it odd that he still does this and still sometimes (most of the time lately) wakes up at least once/night and whines for a few second/minutes and then goes back to sleep.... Any other CIO mommies DCs do this? Or does this mean that CIO isn't working for us as well as I thought it always was?

Re: Mommies that use CIO....
Sounds normal to me. For us, we started introducing a different bedtime routine IN her bed when she started the whole whining at bedtime. We just took it to mean she needed a little more help with the transition to bedtime. We now read three books to her while she's physically in her bed, and she knows after that last book, it's straight to bed. As for the waking in the middle of the night, all kids do that. As long as they go back to sleep, then it's fine. Actually, in Dr. Ferber's book, he explained that we all wake in the middle of the night, but the difference is that we go right back to bed, but babies get scared and can't, and that once CIO is in place, they learn to go back to sleep. He probably wakes with a cry, sees all is fine adn goes back down. Totally normal, and sounds like it's still successful for you guys

Thank you so much. The problem that I'm having is that as soon as I close his bedroom door and sit to read his book(s) to him he is down off my lap and trying to climb into his crib saying "night night". So, I don't know what else to do with him for his routine. When we used the bottle it was so much easier b/c he used that time while taking the bottle to transition himself to sleepy time. Now, I take a sippy of milk up to his room with us but he won't sit on my lap and take it, he barely drinks three sips out of it.... What else could I do to help him transition? Any suggestions? I hate hearing him cry, but for us it's the only option b/c he just will not go to sleep for us any other way...

Re: Mommies that use CIO....
There are nights when Jack is exhausted where he doesn't fight bed.
There are nights when I guess he isn't ready yet and he will cry to me. Never really more then 10 minutes though.
I think it's totally normal! You are doing a great job!

Thank you. I just really feel like I don't know what I'm doing as a mommy a lot of the time...

I logged off last night, so I didn't see this. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that once I think I know something as a mom, I realize I don't know anything at all It's like playing a game where the rules are constantly changing, but no ones telling you Personally, I always felt that some kids needed to cry to get out their frustrations from the day and then they fall asleep. My daughter was like that for the longest time. What about putting him in bed and THEN reading to him. Even if he's not really paying attention, eventually he'll get into the routine. It takes like 3 weeks to form a new routine, so keep trying and trying. Or what about playing in his room for a while before bedtime? This way he transitions into his room? Or hell, be mean like me and let him cry

Actually he has two lovies in his bed now, a blankie that he LOVES and his "Sammie", a teddy bear from Kohls... I THINK they are helping, but I'm not sure. It's been a long three weeks or so, we have two year molars, a bacterial infection in his toe that we waited too long to pay attention to , he's on his second round of antibiotics from that infection, and it's a strong one clyndmycin or something like that, his toe is still red and peeling now he still says it hurts, AND tonight bring on the diaper rash........ or yeast, I can't tell but he can barely walk with his legs together... I know this is rambling and one big huge run on sentence but that's how this 3 weeks has been... Thank you for all of you guys giving me advice. Makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only "mean" mommy that makes my kid cry to go to sleep...
