Mommies who will be going back to work

Right now i usually do not get home from work until 6 o'clock. DH is on the same schedule. It makes me really sad that if I get home everyday at this time that i will only have a couple of hours a night with the baby. Unfortunatly we both have to work. I don't know it makes me sad and concerned. Anyone else in this same situation? What will you do?

I hope so. I'll have to talk with my boss when it's closer. Chat Icon Chat Icon hopefully they will be understanding.

Re: Mommies who will be going back to work

I am in the exact same boat. I get home around 6 p.m. and so does my husband. I am due in April. I'll be going back to work in July. I don't have the slightest idea yet who will watch my son. I have to start looking into sitters/daycare. It makes me REALLY sad. We also have no choice, I have to go back to work because we can't live on one salary.

Good luck!! We will get by the best we can!

Re: Mommies who will be going back to work

My situation is a little bit different in the regard that my DH will be with DS until about 3pm, then I will pick him up around 6:30pm-7pm.

It doesn't really make me sad, but I know I will just have to make the most out of the time that I have with him. DH will also be working, so we will have that time for just DS and I. It's hard, and my job is completely not flexible with hours, I have to work 9-5 and then my commute is roughly an hour each way.

Re: Mommies who will be going back to work

DH gets home with DS around 5:30pm and I'll get home around 6:30pm. While it's tough bc we don't spend a whole lot of time with him before he goes to bed, I truly believe it's quality not quantity.

We have our evening routine and at 20 months DS knows exactly what it is. I think he looks forward to it. The weekends are family time, we take him to gym on Sat mornings and then we'll go to breakfast after. Sundays, sometimes we'll go to church and then lounge around the house.

ETA: This is a typical evening at our house

5:30 - DS goes to the yard with DH to take the dog out
5:45 - DH will prepare DS dinner while DS plays
6:00 - DS eats
6:30 - I get home and play with him
7:00 - he gets a bath
7:15 - DH will read him a story while I prep dinner
7:45 - DS kisses DH good night and I'll take him upstairs for bed.

Re: Mommies who will be going back to work

I am completely stressing (and even depressed) about this prospect. I'm hoping I can cut back to 4 days a week, maybe shorter hours, but my job isn't necessarily easily flexible. I'm very sad about this.

MIL will be watching her, but that aspect makes me even more sad I think, and jealous Chat Icon

I actually will work longer hours but will have Fridays off...I'll have about an hour with my baby every day that I work but at least I'll have 3 whole days of quality time to spend with him or her.

Re: Mommies who will be going back to work

I am trying to work out with my job either getting in early & leaving early (that way I get home with DH & am not sitting in rush hour traffic) or working from home one or 2 days. We'll see what they allow me to do... I know they have made concessions in the past for other new moms.

Re: Mommies who will be going back to work

My baby will be in daycare from 8-6 everyday - I will also have minimal time in the week with my child, DH even less time since he comes home later... plus, I am going to want to work out a few evenings a week, so DH will have to come home a bit earlier so I can get to some classes.... which means I'll spend even less time with the baby on those evenings....

Re: Mommies who will be going back to work

I will be working 9-5 and by the time I get home, make dinner, help my son with his homework, get showers, etc..I won't have a ton of time to spend with the baby, but I plan to make the best of it. Fortunately I'll have the weekends to spend lots of time with both of the kiddos Chat Icon

Re: Mommies who will be going back to work

I leave the house by 7 and get home around 5, but I totally agree with the previous poster who said its not about quantity, its about quality...your child will remember the great times you have together if they were 5 minutes long or 5 hours...

Re: Mommies who will be going back to work

I usually don't get home until 7:30 or 8 - sometimes even later. Not sure what we'll do yet. Trying to take it one step at a time. The good thing is that my boss has an 18month old so I am hoping she'll be supportive of whatever I need to do.

Re: Mommies who will be going back to work

I am a nurse and work nights 7p-7am, 3-4 nights a week with basically everyother weekend off. Trying to learn how to schedule myself for 2 least 3 days off in a row. DH works 2 jobs. 1st 730a-4p & 2nd 5p-930p. So I worry a bit. I would like him to cut back on his hours is I can't but I'm not sure either of us will be able to get that time. I guess we will have to see. Looking forward to my 2-3mon maturnity leave. NSUH Manhasset L&D is crazy busy.

I get home at 5:30 right now with my daughter, and it stinks. But you get used to the schedule and you learn to make the most of the time you have with your child. I am not looking forward to the same schedule with 2 kids. B/c then I will have even less time for both of them. Chat Icon
