Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?

How many words does your 15 month old baby say or try to say? And which ones? I was just told I have to take my youngest for EI as he isn't up to par.

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?

I know my neurologist wants my DS saying 5 words by the time he is 18 months. He is almost 17 months and really doesn't say anything other than mom and dad..I know I'll be onto EI also.

I don't worry too much though because I know so many people that do not have talkers this early. His cognitive abilities are good and that is also a big part of expression

At 15 months, only 2. I asked the ped about it and they said to wait until 18 months before even considering EI. She's 16 months now and just this week she has been trying to say a few things.

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?

Kaitee had about 10 words at that age. she didn't say much until she was 2. Now at 2 1/2 she talks in full sentences just fine.

Brooke is now 16 months, she has tons of words. She will say any easy word that you ask her to say and she uses lots of words on a daily basis. She also says a few 2 word sentances. I think a lot of her talking is due to her listening to her big sister talking non stop all day longChat Icon

Every baby is different but if you are worried then it wouldn't hurt to have him checked out.

The words Brooke says a lot are:

Mommy
Mama
Dada
Daddy
Abby(our dog)
Up
down
All done
milk
water
please
thank you
bless you
Amen
monkey
Mema
ball
book
no
yes
food
orange
apple
cookie
Abby shut upChat Icon (I say this to my dog)
fish
belly
eye
nose
mouth
ear
foot
poop poop
bop(what my girls call diapers)

There are tons more but thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

If you ask her to say a word she will say it. She also copies things we say.Chat Icon She learns a new word daily

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?

We were told 10 words by 18 months. DS already has 10 and he still has a few months to go. Still, I am concerned but I can't explain why. I think it's just because communication is so important to me and I want my son to eventually be a great speaker and writer.

Clover is 16 months and says about 4 or 5 words which I thought was nothing but I guess it is average. I will see what my pediatrician says at her 18 month appt.

Ava at that age had I think 3-5 words tops - Jack had a better vocabulary at that age. He was upwards of 10-15? Not sure.

I do know that I can't believe that he is 15 months old Chat Icon

The ped wasnt concerned. She wanted to know if he said Dad to the right person. Also if he could make it known if he wanted something. He is 18 months now and doesn't say much.

EI is early intervention. I know many people who's children didn't start speaking until they were almost 3. It's really important that their receptive language (what they understand) is there. If they have that, the expressive language will come.
I'm going to make a snarky remark on how people who apparently have advanced children have to list ALL 50 words they know at 15 months. I'm sure that really makes the moms who's kids are not speaking yet feel really good Chat Icon

since I am the one with a long list I am going to assume this was to me. The OP ASKED what they said, so I told her. I also said my oldest DD only said 10 words at that age but now at 2 1/2 has normal speech. I have been there with a child that didn't say much and I was worried. I was simply saying even my 2 kids, that grew up in the same environment have been opposite with speech....

Sofia is 14mts and only says mama.

The dr told me when I went to see him at 13mts that is fine..

He said they do not worry and do not even suggest EI until 18mts..

Sofia walked at 10mts and she understands..

So he said not to worry yet..

Those who have 15mt old's and called EI.. did they say they are to young?

Wow. Totally uncalled for. The OP asked for how many words! And I know it is easier for me to remember if I start listed them!

My DS said about 25-30 words at that point, he has always been VERYverbose, but has gotten a ton more words in the past couple of weeks (and he will be 22 months in 2 days)

Nope. I just evaluated a 14 mt old who has no babbling or speech. But his other skills were well developed, so I doubt he will qualify yet.

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?

My DS doesn't really say anything regularly but dada and I am not sure he always means daddy or is just babbling. He mimics me a lot, though.

I am not worried yet, though because my DS also has a habit of learning or figuring out how to do something and then just decides not to do it anymore after a few days. I was getting kisses for about a week, then he stopped. Now I just get the cheek. He figured out how to wave and then decided not to do it much at all anymore.

He will say what I think I recognize as words once or twice, like when we are reading but then won't repeat them again later. I think he understands a lot and has a lot of non-verbal communication and LOVES books - literally will sit and read through all of his books for like 20 minutes at a time. So, I am not going to start worrying until about 18 months unless the ped tells me otherwise at our 15 month visit in another week.

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?

wow, my ds doesn't say anything other than dada all day long, he's almost 17 months old. He babbles constantly, has his own baby language, and will understand what we tell him, but won't say clear or semi-clear words, not even mommy. I'm praying it's b/c we're raising him to be bilingual and he's all day with my parents who only speak spanish, then with dh and i, who speak english to him. When should I be concerned? If I tell him airplane, in spanish, he knows what it is and to look up in the sky for it, as well as train, but he won't say it, so that's why i'm not worried, but now not so sure after reading all these posts.

Thanks, Liza! Sometimes I do worry because I see what so many other children are doing at his age, both on here and at daycare, but then I remember that I shouldn't compare them and they all go at their own pace. His teachers at daycare have commented on his love for books, they are amazed by it. Chat Icon

My DS is about 14.5 months, and so far, only two words, mama and dada. I think he tries to say up, but it's "Uh", so I'm not completely sure about that.

He does shake his head no and has a sound he makes for yes, but it's not at all like yes. He understands lots of words though, more than I think he does sometimes, so I'm not so worried.

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?

to be honest, i've never really counted his words, and my ped didn't ask at the last appointment.

i would guess about 12-20 words at 15 months... words like mama, dada, baba, book, bell, ball, bubbles (he likes "B" words), arthur (one of the dogs), no, more, this, that, peek-a-boo... along those lines.

but i should say that he doesn't necessarily say words consistently. he'll go through phases where he'll say something for a few days (like peek-a-boo was a big one a few weeks ago) and then stop saying it.

in the last week or so he's gotten many more words and has started repeating words that i say (16 months, 2 weeks old).

i hope this helps, and that everything goes well with your DC Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?

Honestly!! Are you joking! Snarky... first off she asked which words and well I happen to have them listed since my daughter has an ear fluid issue and has had tubes since about 7 months. Tubes that already one is falling out so technically she might go back to hearing in only one ear until the decide what they are going to do. The reason my DD is speaking so much is thanks to her tubes she completely lost her babbling early due to reccurent ear infections and after every antibotic and recefrin she got tubes and we instantly had a speaking child again.
Also my son who will be 4 in May had been in EI since 2 years until at 2.5 they realized hey maybe we should try tubes and taking his adnoids out since his hearing had problems if it was cold, flu or seasonal allergy season. At 2 he had all of a handfull of words by 2.5 he had more words but they weren't clear even though he was reading lips, watching for clues and had awesome receptive language.

Yes child are different especially boys and girls but honestly I have NEVER (the majority of my posts are about it) hid my sons hearing, speech or artic problems and for the first 2.5 years all I ever heard was well he is really physical that's why he doesn't talk. Which honestly was a load of crap... the poor kid heard everything like he was under water!

Long story short don't judge a book by it's cover especially when the the person is just responding to a question asked.

I wish someone proved to me that my son's lack of increasing speech or loss of words he had already meant something if I would have listened to my first Doctor my son would have major issues now his delay which used to be over a year is now one month delayed and as of right now my daughter is doing well.

I have a list because I didn't for my son. I shared my list because I know it would have helped me back then to know what words other kids were saying.
