Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?

I'm going to make a snarky remark on how people who apparently have advanced children have to list ALL 50 words they know at 15 months. I'm sure that really makes the moms who's kids are not speaking yet feel really good
Really not necessary. And quite mean!
Lily was saying about 10-15 words at 15 months. My mom was worried (my ped was not) but now, at 21 months, she's much more verbal. In speaking with people who had children with EI services, I found that the most important thing at that age is that they can communicate....that they can understand what you are saying to them, and can in some way, let you know what they want.

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?
DD will be 15 months next week. She says mama, dada and "what's that" fairly consistently. She says baby, and bambi (her room decor) on command 80% of the time. Things that sound like words include something for "up" "nana" for banana, "dis" for this, and one other thing that I can't remember.

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?
Each child is different and some have more vocab than others but the important part is that, you dont compare to others. Others excel in diff ways.
My DD has a mouth on her, Not bragging, she just does. She didnt walk till 3 days after her 1st bday. I also have a DD in daycare where she is spoken to daily and has no choice but to learn and respond.
In the end, as long as they are on track...no need to be worried or snarky.

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?
At 15 months DS repeated a lot of words we told him (cat, dog, cow, firetruck, car, etc...) but was only saying a few on his own accord (mama, dada, papa, mooo, bow wow, baba, etc...). He was able to understand what we wanted (get the ball, pick up your baba, bring me the truck).
Now at 17 months, he uses a lot more words on his own accord and his vocabulary is expanding each day. He is saying words that I didn't even think he knew (i.e. choo choo train). I know we have identified it before, but it's not a word that I go over and over again like puppy, grandma, etc and yet last week he picked up a train, looked at me and said "choo choo twain".

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?
I had one late talker and one early talker. My first said some words by 15 mos but very few used on a regular basis and many like mama, dada were more sounds. He only had about 5 words he used regularly with meaning at 18mos and my dr said 5 at 18 mos was fine. His expressive language was also very high. he understood everything and then some. My dr wasn't concerned with EI until closer to 2. More important than words at that age, he was communicating in other ways, imitating sounds, babbling, etc. He took off right after he turned 2. He had just under 50 words at 2 and 2 months later I couldn't keep count. My little one is 18 mos now and I lost count of his # of words at 14/15 mos (I was over 70). Not sure what he doesn't say now. They are so different in terms of speech. Personally, I think EI unless there are other issues outside of verbal speech 15 mos is too young for EI. My dr had told me when I had speech concerns with my oldest, that they don't recommend EI for verbal until 18mos-2yrs (they say girls closer to 18 mos and boys 2yrs).

Re: Moms of 15 Month Olds - How Many Words Do They Say?
Hi Heather-how have you been Well I have 2 opposites as well. Jenna was an early talker-started saying mama at 6/7 months and hasn't stopped talking since-literally-lol But at 15 months ahe had about 10 basice words-mama and dada included.
Kyle is almost 14 months and nowhere near that. He says mama, dada, da-dee, duh (for dog), was-sat (what's that) and just recently cheese (whenever he sees a cellphone or a camera and thinks he is going to get his pic taken). I am honestly not concerned and I remember my ped saying not to get concerned till 18 months. He babbles and has "conversations" with his toys which I think is important, makes great eye contact and pretty much understands what we are saying and can follow simple commands like "Kyle go get your bear". Hugs!

OMG I agree!
At 15 months DS was saying, mama, dada, book, juice, go, fish, and a few words in Polish.
ETA: I also think that there should be no rush to EI, unless there are other factors that are worrying you. Such as, no eye contact, and no communication whatsoever.
