Moms of 16-22 month olds, question about play

I'm just wondering about play at this age. How much time does your DC spend with a toy at a given moment? I ask bc my 18 month old DS will play with something for a couple of minutes and then move onto the next thing. Every once in a while he'll stop longer to work on something like the shape sorter or to figure out megablocks, etc. Sometimes I try to get him to stay with something longer but it doesn't go over too well.

I would say 10 minutes tops. It's probably because we have too many toys. I think if we had less toys available to her, she would play with the ones that our out for a longer period of time.

I would ask dd teacher all the time about this. She will only play with a toy for a few minutes then on to the next, her teachers say its normal. Her favorite thing to do is fill up and empty the tubs of toys over and over again while humming or singing. She just turned 22 months and she finally is able to sit and watch Mickey mouse all the way through while cuddling with me. Chat Icon I love the cuddle part because she was on the go so much.

This is what my mom said to me, that we have too many toys out. I put some away but it looks like a lot.

DS just turned 18 months old yesterday and can play with something for 5-30 minutes. His new addiction is "coloring". He can sit for 30 minutes and color...He loves certain toys and could careless about others...Dr said it is normal for them to only for a few minutes...

DS is 21 months and it depends on his mood and the activity that we are doing. Sometimes he jumps from toy to toy and other times he can stick with one thing for a really long time. We played playdoh this morning for almost and hour!

I found that the more toys that are out, the more distracted he is and the shorter time he spends with each one. It's like something will catch his eye and then he's on to the next one. I would say 5-10 min is the average - sometimes longer if it's new and exciting to him (like a push toy)
