Moms of 5 month olds: Solids Questions

I have been giving DD rice cereal at one feeding a day and was wondering if I should increase it to two feedings a day. Also, have any of you started DC on different cereals yet--oatmeal or barley?

TIA!

I have been giving DS (who is 5 months old today) cereal since he turned 3.5 months. I started with rice and then moved to oatmeal. I never tried barley. He now gets oatmeal and a fruit in the morning and rice cereal with a vegetable at night. I did notice that he has decreased the amount of formula that he will take in a day due to this which I'm not happy about. Hope this helps...

We started DD on cereal at 4 months, as per our ped we were giving her 1tbs twice a day we started with Barley than oatmeal and then rice in 4 day increments, meaning we had to stick to one cereal for 4 days

Emerson started solids at 4 months. From the get-go she was eating 2 tsp. of cereal 2X/day. I only ever gave her the oatmeal and rice cereals. Every few days she tried a new fruit or veggie. Now at 8 months old she has 3 meals a day and 4 bottles. Chat Icon At 5 months old if your DC is interested I would increase the amount and frequency of cereal and start on some fruit and veggies.

They are suppose to decrease the formula once you introduce solids so don't worry. As soon as Emerson started solids she dropped from 8oz. bottles to 7oz. bottles right away. Within a few weeks she cut a bottle out and then went down to 6oz. At 8 months she has four 6oz. bottles a day plus 3 meals. They should gradually need less and less formula so by the time they are 1 they are basically weaned off of it since all they get after that is some milk but basically all table food like us. Re: Moms of 5 month olds: Solids Questions

At such a young age formula/breastmilk is most important. Feeding milk first then solids an hour or so after is a good idea.

Formula/breastmilk is all they NEED in their first year. So its most important they get that. As long as he doesn't drop below 20-24 ozs of formula he should be getting enough. If he is dropping below that then backing off of solids would be a good idea.

The rule of thumb is that the average baby takes 2 to 3 ozs of formula for every pound of body weight in a 24 hour period, up to a maximum of 32 ounces.

Re: Moms of 5 month olds: Solids Questions

Our ped. gave us the green light to begin giving DD solids at her 4 month appointment. I personally felt it was way too early, so we've only been giving her the rice cereal once in the morning until about a week ago. We started adding fruits and just started veggies today, but I honestly forgot that they make other types of cereals besides rice Chat Icon

I think I will pick up a box of oatmeal and do what one of the OP suggested--oatmeal & fruit in the morning, rice & veggie in the evening.

I started DS on rice cereal once a day since he was 4 months, I quickly noticed how it started binding him and how miserable he got, so I cut down the RC to 3 times a week only (Mon. Weds. Fri.) He also hates it anyway so I'm finishing the box and trying oatmeal next. I'll try giving it to him again once a day and see if he is OK with it.
