moms of babies who sleep on their bellies come in

Do you think 5.5 months is too little for DS to be napping on his belly? He's a terrible napper (but sleeps through the night) and I am looking for ways to get him to sleep for longer periods of time during the day. I was thinking maybe him sleeping on his belly would help. But is 5.5 months too young?
(sidenote: DS unfortunately hates tummy time. He's got really good neck control...he can lift his head really well when on his tummy BUT its not for a long period of time.)

I would say as long as he can lift his head enough to change it's position ..he will be fine.Chat Icon

this is tough. I can only tell you that I wasn't comfortable with it until I was 100% sure my dd could lift her whole upper body up. Just lifting her head for a few seconds/minute wouldn't be enough for me. HTH

I think you know your baby best, when my DS could lift his head and have full control we let him nap on his belly during the day while we were around. When he could roll over we let him sleep at night on belly.

For me I think belly naps are totally ok for you Son, maybe just really keep an eye on him the first few times.

My DS is the same, he's a good sleeper at night but won't sleep for longer than 45 minutes for naps. I'm going to start letting him nap on his belly when I get home from vacation (he's 4.5 months).

DS slept on his belly from the day we brought him home from the hospital. He hated his back. It took me a while to get used to it but he was fine.

My son is 8 weeks old and I sometimes put him on his belly to nap. I feel OK doing this because he's within reach of me and I check on his constantly. Its the only way I can get a good nap in during the day.

Don't kill me but my DD was sleeping on her tummy before her 1 month mark... She would not sleep on her back, ever. One day my grandma had put her on her tummy to nap and she slept for 3 hours straight, more than ever before. Like she says, we (my family) were all raised to sleep on our tummies and we turned out fine. The first couple of times I did it at night I had the monitor on and just studied her and already she was able to move her head from side to side and if she did land on her face, her head would roll to the side anyway. Study how your DC sleeps on their tummy and make your decision from that. Chat Icon

Ditto for DD, probably even younger and she slept on her side from the day I brought her home from the hospital.

If he can roll over and you think it would help with sleeping, I say go for it!

Good luck!

DS1 - slept on belly starting at 5 weeks

DS2 - slept on belly starting at 3 weeks

Some tips:
Nothing in the crib - no toys and no blankets
Breathable bumpers (or no bumpers but if you have slates you're going to have to pull out a limb from time to time Chat Icon )
Tight fitting sheet
Sleepsack
No swaddle

You can add blankets and a lovey over time once you are comfortable. Gregory sleeps with a blanket at night.

DD started belly sleeping at around 7 weeks. Best decision EVER.

She HATED...hated her back. Wouldnt even close her eyes if she was placed on her back.

Ditto and he went from waking up every 1.5-2 hours to sleeping 5-6 hour stretches! I felt comfortable with it because he had good neck control very early and by 2 months was able to pick up his head and move it side to side.
