Moms of Babies with Milk allergies..

DD has a severe milk protein allergy and is on Elercare. She is 3 months old. Just wondering when your Dr. let you try soy or other formula? Or did you just have to wait until it was time to try milk? What age was that?
Also, did the Dr. make you wait to try foods- cereal, rice, etc?
Did you continue to see the Ped GI once your DC was diagnosed and given the approriate formula? We haven't been back to the GI in a while..she was diagnosed and we had one followup visit two weeks later and all is well.
Just wondering how long this may last and what to expect.
TIA!

Re: Moms of Babies with Milk allergies..

my DD is 10 months she has a milk/soy protein allergy and is also on ele care.. we were sent to an allergist when she was around 4 months and she is a highly allergic baby... i heard that most babies do out grow the allergy at 1 yr. i would not even think about switching formula stick with it bc she needs it. and talk to your ped... if at at a yr they want to try her on milk then go a head.. i dont think u would need the upper gi any more since the ele care is working... Re: Moms of Babies with Milk allergies..

DD has a milk allergy, but we didn't find out until she was 5.5 months as I was EBF at the beginning. She had regular formula 2 times and violently threw up with it, so my ped told us to try soy formula.

DD has tolerated the soy formula just fine. Because I was BFing, I waited until DD was 6 months old to start cereal and in the last couple of weeks, we have been introducing vegetables.

I am not sure where we go from here. I believe we will not allow her to have any milk products until she is 1 and then go from there. My ped does 1 year bloodwork so she mentioned something about having allergy testing being done at that time as well. I will cross that bridge when we get to it!

DD did not handle soy well at all. It's a severe milk protein allergy. I'm just really hoping she grows out of this.

I guess at the next peds appt I'll ask what he thinks about it.

I just noticed that some DCs are starting rice or cereal and they are DDs age or even a little younger and I'm just wondering if he's holding her off because of the allergy or if that's just his schedule..

Kieran was diagnosed with milk protein allergy when he was 6 wks old. I have been EBF since he was born, so don't have any answers for you about formula. But ped had us start oatmeal (or rice cereal) at 4 months, and he'll be starting fruits and veggies at 6 months.

My DD has a milk protein allery and has been on elecare since 8 weeks old. I introduced oatmeal at 4 months and fruits/veggies at 6 months. She is almost 10 months and we intoduced regular yo baby yogurt to her last week. She has been doing fine with it. I meet with the GI doctor again in 2 weeks to just make sure everything is going well. She has no symptoms of allergy to the yogurt. I'm assuming her belly is doing great with it. She loves the yogurt. I can't get it in her mouth quick enough. Chat Icon

Re: Moms of Babies with Milk allergies..

DS has been mostly breast fed but goes to an allergist for horrible eczema he's had since 6weeks old. We tried milk based formula once and he got hives. After this he had a skin test which tested positive for cow's milk protein. The allergist skin tested him for the foods we were most likely to introduce (peas, apples, pears, rice, oat, etc) and gave us the go ahead for those foods (i get nervous with every one) and so far so good. I imagine we have to wait for the next round of allergy testing for new foods.

DS has a severe milk protein and soy allergy. He has been on Elecare since 8 weeks old. He can't have anything with dairy or soy in it. even the littlest amount does a job on his belly. We didn't wait to start any foods. Our pedi GI had him on rice cereal at 2.5 months. So when he hit 4 months we went right to oatmeal and fruits. He has done fine. Just watch out for some Gerber foods, it has soy in it...Found out the hard way...DS has done great with Earths Best and Beech Nut...He is 8 months old now and I won't be switching him over until at least a year. Both his dr's said they hadn't seen such a severe allergy in a baby in many years....

Also, they had us start foods at 6 months but to do it slowly. One food at a time for several days. I think they will continue to test him for milk protein but i am not sure.

I think 3 months is very young to start introducing cereals from what I understand. Just as an FYI, my DS did not have any milk allergies and he didn't start cereal until 6 months. So I don't think your ped would be holding your DC off for allergy reasons.

With DD, I was just told to read labels carefully to make sure there were no milk products in anything I was giving her. We are doing the normal schedule of trying a new food for a few days to make sure there is no reaction before moving onto another new food.

Re: Moms of Babies with Milk allergies..

We waited until it was time to go to milk. DS remained under the care of the GI and I have to say, I think that worked out a lot better than it would have if he was put on Elecare and then sent right back to the pediatrician. When things were going okay, we did not have to go often but they monitored DS so closely.

DS was on cereal for his reflux. Our pedi starts cereal in most of his patients at 4 months. But he usually waits until 5 months for baby's with allergies. But because he was on rice cereal already (GI doctor put him on it), our dr saw no problem with it...

Re: Moms of Babies with Milk allergies..

My DD has a milk protein allergy. Ped ok'd us to try soy around the 3-month mark - we tried it but DD was having terrible gas issues so we stayed on Alimentum. I may try again in a few months but maybe not. DD is now on solids so we may just wait to try dairy in a few months - not milk but cheese or yogurt, where the proteins are different so it's less likely to be an issue. My ped told us we could start solids at 4 months, only gave me a short list of highly allergenic foods to avoid (egg whites, strawberries, citrus, nuts, etc.), and told us to try foods for 5-7 days instead of the usual 3 - although she advises all of her patients to do that whether or not they have allergies. Perhaps if we had to go to rx formula, her approach would be different but from what I know, we got the same advice on solids that everybody else does and she's hopeful that the milk allergy will be outgrown by DD by the end of her first year. We shall see...
