Moms of children who were evaluated for EI or CPSE pls. come in
So Jack has been getting speech therapy since 18 months (He will be 3 the end of June)
It's time for him to get evaluated for CPSE. We had the speech eval the other day and he wouldn't do a single thing. This is now a kid who doesn't shut up and has more words than I can count. He was being so stubborn and wouldn't even look at her book.
They are sending someone back tomorrow to try to test him again.
Has this happened to anyone?

This is so common - was this a therapist he never saw before?
It happens all the time!

Yes, he never met her before and in all honesty she wasn't too friendly towards him (not sure if she's supposed to be that way or not)
She wanted to do the eval at the kitchen table when I explained to her that he gets speech at his little table and chairs in the living room. He never really sits at the kitchen table (he eats at his little table too) but she insisted that we do it there so DH was literally holding him on his lap forcing him to sit and look at her book. She then asked me for suggestions since it wasn't working, I said "Sit at his little table" but by that point we already lost him.
I am PRAYING that tomorrow goes better. She also knew that the way he was wasn't normal for him because when she walked in he said "Hi, how are you" and when she was leaving he said "Bye, see you soon!" - so she didn't think it was fair to test him on his lack of performance.

Yep...Noah wouldnt even LOOK at the evaluator the first time she came, she left after an hour. He never looked up. She came again a few days later, we didnt think he would do any better but he did. It was( is) a LOT of testing and that sucks, because they want no part of it, but she was good and kept at it and got him to participate. It was HARD though and took forever!
And we Had a Psych eval, OT eval, two speech evals and waiting on another Psych eval...Same thing with ALL of them.

Boy you also have some bad luck with therapists..I cannot believe she wouldnt do it at his table?? That makes so much more sense?!?!?
Our evaluator this time was literally laying on Noahs floor in his room trying to get him to play, look up , anyhting.

Yep, we have a psych eval on Thursday, I'm so over all of these evaluations. They are soooo damn nervewracking, the entire time you think "Is there something wrong with my kid since he's not doing this"
I'm at the point where I want to say forget about CPSE since he is talking up a storm, but I know it's not in his best interest to do that.

awww do not feel that way..though believe me I get that feeling, I have it a lot, but I know the services help and if it helps any, all our therapists say most boys with speech delays are more intelligent in other areas ...so its a curse and a blessing
and the psych eval is mostly for IQ ..and much easier then speech. ( quicker)

Can you do them in the backyard since he likes to be outside? Maybe at his picnic table?

No advice just
TJ did not requalify for EI through Nassau but I am trying to get him reevaluated through CPSE (if they ever call me back ) and I am afraid he may not be receptive to the evaluator.

Re: Moms of children who were evaluated for EI or CPSE pls. come in
WeHad the evaluation done 2 weeks ago, since Logans EI sessions will end April 15 and luckily our regular therapist did the evaluation, maybe bcs she used to work for CPSE. Logan was really good and finished the evaluation in 1 session. My therapist said none of her kids ever finished in 1 session. Your evaluator shouldn't have been so stubborn and listened to you and sat in the kids chair and maybe Jack would have cooperated. Hope you have better luck next time.

Your experiences are making me feel much better. The therapist told us she's never seen this behavior before.

What an @ss- and I totally call B.S. on her. EVERY therapist has seen a child refuse to comply. It's a GOOD therapist who works at the child's comfort level to get the results she's looking for.
Sorry you've had such a bad time with these people Diana.
ETA: I have never finished an eval in one session. NEVER.

If he is already getting speech, can't he get evaluated by his speech therapist he already has?

Your experiences are making me feel much better. The therapist told us she's never seen this behavior before. Then she obviously is not a seasoned and experienced therapist. A professional well seasoned in this field sees every behavior under the sun. NOTHING shocks someone with experience!!!

Re: Moms of children who were evaluated for EI or CPSE pls. come in
YES. Its very frustrating. Ry had his evals in school a couple of months back and was uncooperative and if he doesn't do the task they are asking for, they have to mark it as a no, like he can't do it. This is why he scores a lot lower than he should. The only good thing is that it does guarantee him the services that he needs and we want for him.

I assumed that she couldn't test him, not sure why exactly. We have someone else coming tomorrow now so I guess I'll see how that goes.

I was going to ask the same question but just assumed that maybe they did it differently in NY.

Ale was evaluated by her regular speeth therapist.
I would check again..... they must know that children take some time to warm up to a person, and your pathologist probably knows already if he will pass or not.

For CPSE or just her regular EI eval?
Of course I want to call his speech therapist right now. Is it too late at night?

Just FYI- Our School district wouldnt allow our regular therapist to do Noah's eval unless it was absolutly neccesary. We called the district, and they said that they dont allow that, they wanted someone seperate but if our 2nd eval attempt failed, they would condier it.
All districts are different....but since your in Karas district, I'm assuming based on that, its likely allowable. I would call the agency you choose for the eval. tommorow and find out.

DD is terrible with new people and does awful on all evaluations. What has helped us a bit is to have her normal therapist present during the eval because that makes her more comfortable and she responds better.
