Moms of eczema babies...
I have a few questions...
James has uber-sensitive skin and there are definite patches on his upper body that are rough and raised, it almost looks like poison ivy - is that eczema? It's the worst on his upper arms, shoulders and along the sides of his back. The doctor just told up to slather him in Aveeno lotion and lube him up with Cortaid a few times a day. It doesn't seem to bother him at all...
What more, if anything, should I be doing for him? We wash his clothing in Dreft - should I switch to a free & clear detergent? It's really just concentrated where his onesie is - his legs are dry, but not patchy like his trunk.
Thanks!

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
DD has eczema and it sounds like your DS does too. Our ped wrote a prescription for stronger cortisone cream for when it gets really rough and red and that clears it up within a day or two. For the not-so-bad but still red/rough patches, we use aquaphor ointment. We use Aveeno fragrance free cream for everyday. We had been using Aveeno lightly scented shampoo in the tub and we had to stop that - we switched to California Baby super sensitive and it made a huge difference.
The ped said that it doesn't usually get itchy and bother them until they are older

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
DD has eczema and sees a pediatric dermatologist for it, since it can get pretty bad. She is currently on two topical medications for it, but we started out with cortaid. We do baths once every 2 days and only dress her in cotton. We can only use shampoo that is fragrance free and dove or ivory soap on her body. We lather her up with Aveeno cream (not the lotion) and her face with cetaphil cream each night. It definitely helps her, but without the medication, she still gets horrible patches.

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
DS has really dry patches. I keep asking the ped about it and she hasn't called it eczema - but I feel like it's something more then just dry skin. It's all over his arms, sometimes on his torso and on the sides of his face (where it is also really red.) He seems to be completely unphased by it. The ped told me to use Cetaphil to wash him with and Aquaphor to mosturize. We also only give him a bath every 2-3 days.

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
I've been using Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema cream, which has been working great for dd. I give her a bath with dove sensitive soap every 2 days. Her pediatrician told me to use hydrocortisone on her when it gets very itchy, I try not to use it though since it can lighten the skin. Her skin seems to be the best right after a bath and lathered up with the eczema cream.

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
any type of free & clear detergent is fine. I personally wouldn't use dreft - number 1 because of the cost - but because it does have a scent - which can irritate.
i use the aveeno creamy body wash on Em, use that same moisturizer - aveeno - made for ecxema skin & we bathe her ONCE a week in warm, not hot water. in the summer - we do it twice a week - but not now.
we are also very very careful not to let her sweat. that is when it gets very bad - if she sweats, she gets a heat rash immediately.

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
DS has eczema. It was pretty bad, but is hardly noticable anymore. What our ped told us and we did is:
Put only cotton clothes next to his skin. At night, we put him in a cotton sleeper and then a poly/cotton sleepsack. On the red raised areas, put cortisone cream (we use Aveeno) On the rest of his body, put Eucerin cream twice a day. We have been following this regimen for a month now and his skin is most definitely better. You wouldn't even know he has eczema anymore.
And we still use Dreft. Mostly cuz we were given a huge bottle of it and I can't see letting it go to waste.

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
I only use Dove soap on my youngest and then use cetaphil lotion. If it is bad I use cetaphil and then seal it with some aquaphor

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
DD had it until recently. we went to 3 different dermatologists (one of them DR. Kristal (spl) ) They all recommended: - Dreft -Cerave lotion 2x a day (in blue bottle, not green) you can buy at wallgreens -No long baths and NO bubble baths -Aveeno body wash -They prescribed Hydrocortisone ointment. -cotton undershirts and PJs DD doesn't have it any mote (she is 2), no more breakouts since we moved from our old place , so we think something in the house was causing her eczema

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
DS has eczema patches in his arms, lower back and in the back of his thigh.(& has sensitive skin) My Ped recommended Aquaphor ointment and only bathing every other day plus washing with Dove bar soap (for sensitive skin) The Aquaphor worked really great for awhile but recently didn't seem to work as great ~ Lately I have been putting Jajoba Oil every day & has been doing great!

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
DD is 2 and the MINUTE the weather gets cold, she breaks out in eczema over her torso and legs...
Dr. said limit bath time, NO bubble baths (let her play for a few minutes, lather her, rinse and leave bath), and Aquaphor.
I also only bathe her every other day...and I use Aveeno wash. I did see the Aquaphor wash in the store today, I was wondering how it worked...

Re: Moms of eczema babies...
*I* have eczema, and at nearly 27 yrs old, I do most of what's mentioned in this post!
Unscented, gentle soap. Aquaphor to moisturize. Lukewarm water, never hot. Natural fabrics touching the skin.
daily washing is too drying for eczema babies. Stretch it out 2-3-4 days.
