Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
What age did you / will you allow your little girl to get her ears pierced? DH and MIL keep pressing the issue with me and I really want to wait until she is much older. I had to wait until I was 12 to get mine pierced. Old enough to be responsible for cleaning them and old enough to have them when I got dressed up.
Opinions?

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
I think it's something that should be done later. I got mine done in 5th grade-- which I think is a good age.

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
We did it at 6 months. She cried. She got over it.
ETA: I got mine at 5 years old and since I was aware of what was being done, there was more anxiety over it. See? I can remember it. It was done at Roosevelt Field in 1975.

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
We did ours at 3.5 months...our view was the earlier the better, she cried for a few seconds and it was done, as opposed to me who go it done at 3, they did it in one ear and I ran around like a mad woman before they could the second one bc I was frightened...so I think my trauma made us do it earlier

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
3 months Julia got her ears pierced, I find it better when they are young, they don't know where there ears are yet so they can't play with them and get them infected, I know a few of my girlfriends that waited and there kids got infections from touching them.

Funny you say that. Abby NEVER touches her own earrings. She only plays with mine.

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
I will wait until they ask for them, or maybe around First Communion or something special like that. For me, it's not about the responsibility or whether or not they'll be traumatized; the bottom line is I don't love the pierced ears look on little babies--MY little babies anyway.

Us, too. It's more fun for them when they're older. I took my SD when she was about 12 and it was worth the wait for both of us!

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
I wanted to get them while she was young (0-6months). Now that she is at the in between age, we are waiting until she is at least 5.

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
i have always thought i'll wait until she's old enough to ask for them - whenever that time comes....
i have nothing against ear piercings for babies - but i'd rather not make that decision for her - ya know?
i appreciate that my mom wanted ME to want them and didn't just 'do it'....(again - not that there is ANYTHING wrong with it - they look ADORABLE!!!)

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
DD got hers done at 2.5 months. She didn't cry and forgot about it 2 seconds later. Never got infected, I think it was the best time for her to get it done

I spoke with her ped. She said either do it young (which I did - 2 months) or wait until she was 10.

I completely agree with you. I was also 12. I think I'd let DD get hers done around 10.

so funny I was the opposite. I was so angry with my parents for not having mine done when I was younger b/c in 5th grade I wanted them pierced so badly but was so afraid of the pain!!
