Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
When she asks for them. I don't want to subject her to unecessary pain. I got mine pierced when I was around 8, which is when I asked for it to be done.

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
When she can ask for it. I remember having mine done and it is a great memory...picking out the earrings, admiring them after, even the little bit of fear that went along with it. I want to make it a special day for her. When she asks for it, I will arrange for a special "big girl" day for her. She can get her ears pierced, pick a special place she wants to go to for lunch, pick something fun to do for the day. It will be her day. And if she doesn't ever want them pierced, that will be her choice, too.

I will wait until they ask for them, or maybe around First Communion or something special like that. For me, it's not about the responsibility or whether or not they'll be traumatized; the bottom line is I don't love the pierced ears look on little babies--MY little babies anyway.
I agree.
While I think they can be cute on other little babies, it's not for us.
I remember when I had mine done, my grandmother took me when I was 7. It was a special treat and a treasured memory.

it's so funny because I got mine pierced when I was a bit older and I am still traumatized from it
I REALLY wanted to get it done, I guess I was around 5 or so./ My dad took me to the jeweler like 3 times and I chickened out. The last time, my dad was sick of taking me so he held me while the jeweler pierced them, not fun

Yikes, yeah I'm sure being held down for it was not fun! I wouldn't do that. Do you think if you waited a few more years/til you weren't so scared, it would have been ok? I think I was in second grade or so when I got mine done.

DD will be at least 10 and only if she asks at that time otherwise never. My sister and I both had to wait until we were 12.

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
The pain didn't hurt Abby, being held down did. HOWEVER, I have to hold her down to put saline in her nose and I get the same reaction. It doesn't keep me from giving her saline though.
I find these experiences are generally more traumatic for the parents because they are able to internalize and anticipate pain when an infant can't. I did not want to watch it, so I didn't.

ITA. I still remember the day I had mine done. My mom and I made a whole special day out of it. It was sooo exciting. And I remember when we took my cousin when she was 12. It is a great memory.

Re: Moms of Girls - Ear piercing question
When she's old enough to ask for them to be done (I'm thinking 5+), she'll be allowed to have them done. I think of it like this-- what if she doesn't ever want her ears pierced? I'd hate to make that decision for her.

3 months Julia got her ears pierced, I find it better when they are young, they don't know where there ears are yet so they can't play with them and get them infected, I know a few of my girlfriends that waited and there kids got infections from touching them.
Same here but at 4 months.

nope, I was a HUGE cry baby so I would have freaked our regardless. My parents used to always "force" me to do differnt things that I was afraid of and I wound up ejoying them...(big slides at the park, water slides, etc)
