Moms of potty trained boys....

When did you begin?

When did it seem successful?

I know women who are starting their girls soon and they are Cailen's age, but I don't feel he will be ready for a while - he will be 17mts old this week....

Re: Moms of potty trained boys....

DS is 25 mos and so not ready. I did buy a potty about 6 mos ago, I keep it in the bathroom and ask him once or twice a day if he wants to sit on it, but he usually says no. He doesn't mind a wet diaper and still wakes up with a full diaper, he doesn't seem to know when he is urinating so I don't think he is ready. Hopefully by 2 1/2.

Re: Moms of potty trained boys....

DS poopy trained at 2.5. We didn't really start him any sooner because DD came when he was 2. He was easy, he pooped once a day and always after dinner. So we took hm to the potty about 20 minutes after dinner and soon it became routine and he just pcked up the pooppng part very easy.

Took us 6 months longer to get the pee part down!! He was fully trained, day and night, 3 days after his 3rd b-day.

Re: Moms of potty trained boys....

Ok, this is a little unrelated, but to help you a little when you start, I was talking to friends of mine at a party yesterday and here are some tips they used to potty train their boys. I thought they were all great ideas:

- every night before a bath, sit them on the toilet (the real toilet) and praise them if they happen to pee

- you may notice that he stands up in the bath when he has to pee, like he knows its coming, at that point try to use something to catch it (a cup or whatever) and praise him after he goes

- my friends husband used to say "somethings coming, somethings coming" to their son and take the kid to the bathroom w/him to show him how to go...eventually the kid picked up on it and started doing that himself with in a day or two (but it was a week after using other methods...they trained him at 26mos)

Re: Moms of potty trained boys....

I just knew when each of my boys (2 of them) were ready. My daughter trained by the time she was 18 months basically on her own. Both of my boys were closer to three years old (But I am sure you know each child is different). I started when they were younger but it never caught on. When it was time I used to let them run around naked in the house and take them to the toilet about every half hour to 45 minutes, when they woke up and after meals. I used a token economy (stickers, and other favorites but you decide what works for your family) to help encourage them as well, which was very sucessful for me.

Re: Moms of potty trained boys....

DS is not fully potty trained but he has been PPing on the potty. I started these steps also:

-every night before a bath, sit them on the toilet (the real toilet) and praise them if they happen to pee

- you may notice that he stands up in the bath when he has to pee, like he knows its coming, at that point try to use something to catch it (a cup or whatever) and praise him after he goes

We started doing this when DS was 21mths after I notice he would catch his PP in a cup in the bath. Last night he actually came to me pointed and said PP, so I ripped his clothes and pamper off and he went on the toilet.

Steven seemed interestedd at 20 months. I got him a seat for the toilet and he is petrified of it. So, he's not ready yet.

Re: Moms of potty trained boys....

We tried to start DS#1 around 20 months with a potty but he wasn't interested. We left alone for a while until about 26 months. He was day trained 4-5 months later. The daycare really helped bc they really encouraged it during the day. DH also started letting him come into the bathroom with him, so he can see how boys are supposed to pee. His teachers were surprised and said he was the only boy who stood up.

I have no plans to start training DS#2 until after his 2nd birthday.
