Moms of Toddlers - When You Put your Kids to Sleep...

Do they lay in the bed and go to sleep??? Like, good night mom and dad, snuggle with their teddy bear and go to bed??

My boys are 2.5 years old and we had to switch them over to their big boy beds because they jumped so much in their cribs that they broke them. That went fine, but now every night we put them to sleep there is jumping on the beds, both getting out of bed and chasing each other, playing with the window shade, pulling their clothes out of their draws......we have tried everything to get them to go to sleep.....went up and yelled at them, laid with them when they are hysterical...nothing is working and we are going on 6 months. We have had to move every piece of furniture out of their room (I got tired of picking up clothes) they already broke two drawers, and we have locked the closet.

Is this normal? My nephew never did this...went to bed when mom put him down so he is my only point of reference right now.

Thanks!

Yes she just lays there and falls asleep. Sometimes she likes to "read" her books or draw on her drawing pad but we do not sit with her until she falls asleep. Same if she happens to wake up during the night. We put her back to bed and she falls to sleep again

My girls (2 1/2 years old and 17 months old), are both in twin beds. They share a room. On some nights they stay in bed and go right to sleep. Other nights I hear them play and giggle for up to an hour before they calm down and go to bed.

Re: Moms of Toddlers - When You Put your Kids to Sleep...

Hahaha I just had a flashback to when my DD was smaller. She use the trash her bedroom we use to call her "T-Wrecks" (her first name starts with a T). I even found her sleeping in a dresser drawer one night. It was a mess every single night. She was about that age IIRC. My older son never did that and my younger son who is a toddler now, doesn't do it either.

She did outgrow it though. She's almost 5 now and hasn't done it for a long time so by around 3 yrs old, it feels like it's been so long since she did it, I can't believe it was on a daily basis when she was a toddler. She still needs to putz around in her room at night before going to sleep but she doesn't wreck the place anymore, she plays with her dolls or another toy by nightlight.

So hopefully it will pass for you as well. Chat Icon

Re: Moms of Toddlers - When You Put your Kids to Sleep...

DD pretty much goes to sleep.
Sometimes she wants us to lay there with her and we do sometimes, but for the most part lately, we kiss her goodnight and out we go.
She is usually sleep within a few minutes.
**Now that I said something, we are going to have issues now Chat Icon Chat Icon **

Occasionally we will have an off night, like Sunday night, she didn't want to go to sleep right away, I think it was do to the time change, but she was up for a little while - 20 minutes or so.
Then she was quiet, about an hour later, I went to check on her. Couldn't open her door, she had fallen asleep across the door Chat Icon

My DD would go to bed when you put her down with a little bit of complaints. We found putting the music on low helped out alot.

Have you tried a reward system?
Do you have on music of a tv in the background?

I can't put anything anywhere in that room they would grab it! The monitor is usually taken off the table and talked into before they rip it out of the wall.

What type of reward system?? Not sure what you are getting at...

Do you have a whole bedtime "routine"?

Ours starts with bath time, then story and milk then bed.

So by the time it's actually time for him to lay down he's mellow and goes right to sleep.

Or even if he doesn't FALL asleep right away, he still lays down until he does.

Yes, in general, she just lays down and goes right to bed. She doesn't ever get out of bed.

What time are you putting them down? by that point in the evening, they should be worn out. Maybe you're putting them down too early or maybe they need to expel more energy during the day.

Re: Moms of Toddlers - When You Put your Kids to Sleep...

No, my son does not go to sleep. Not at all. Ever. Far from it. He is almost 2.5 and every night is a 3 hour frustrating combination of yelling, pleading, laying down with him, etc. He just keeps getting up and leaving the room or trashing the room or climbing on his drawers, and then if we lock him in his room, he makes himself throw up so we have to go in and clean it up. We are pretty much at our wits end. It is at the point where we just let him stay up until he passes out, which is difficult because it means no alone time for DH and I. Needless to say I AM INSANELY JEALOUS of all the moms out there whose kids just go to sleep on their own! :)

Lily is 21 months and she is a DREAM to put to sleep. She kisses me goodnight, waves goodbye, hugs her woof woof and goes to sleep.

Andrew does not just lay down. We actually can't put him in there until he falls asleep in our bed and then we carry him in there. Otherwise he throws a fit and knocks down his gate, etc. It's just not worth it.

DS just grabs his bunny and bear, blows us kisses and lays down.
He'll be 26 months.
