Moms that exclusively pump...

How long do you pump on each side? How many times a day? TIA Chat Icon

I am worried that I am not "draining" enough - pumping while on antibiotics for Mastitis.

Thank you.

Re: Moms that exclusively pump...

5 times a day- sometimes 6 if I feel engorged in the middle of the night. usually for about 10 - 15 minutes each time- longer if I see the milk is still coming out in streams

I usually get about 22 - 28 ounces a day

Re: Moms that exclusively pump...

Thanks ladies. So pumping only 5 time a day for that duration keeps up your milk supply and prevents you from getting engorged?

I am exclusively pumping this week while on antibiotics and i have been pumping 6-8 times per day (15-20 min) and am still constantly feeling full. I pump during that time about 2 oz on one side 1 on the other (not sure if this is normal). But, when the time is up, I could still keep pumping as there is more milkk on both sides.

I am worried I am going to end up with Mastitis again because I can't seem to drain enough BUT, I am already a slave to the pump...can't do this any more freq!

Re: Moms that exclusively pump...

My lactation consultant said to continue pumping for about 2 minutes after you don't see any more milk coming out. Maybe try pumping for a longer period of time, less often to be sure you are draining the ducts. I think getting only 1-2oz is really little -- maybe because you are doing it so often. In the beginning, I pumped 5-6 times a day (including once during the night when DD woke up to eat), but once I was in full swing, I only pumped 4 times a day -- first thing in the am, then about every 4 hours during the day, and then last thing before going to bed. I never had an issue with supply, and never got engorged or infected.

Thankk you. I thtought I was supposed to pump as freq as I was nursing him before. So you keep pumping until the milk stops? I will try that. Thankk you.
