Mom's that make their own baby food - question for ya...
So my MIL told me that there is no way I will be able to do it...since I work. Now I am more determined than ever to do it
I have some time before DS starts so I want to get prepared and understand as much as I can...so I have some questions:
1. What books do you recommend (especially with recipes)?
2. What jars/storage do you use?
3. What kitchen equipment/tools are helpful and/or necessary?
4. How long does the food last?
5. How long and what way do you store it (do you freeze it)?
6. Any helpful tips and advice?
Thanks!

Re: Mom's that make their own baby food - question for ya...
Go to this site for recipes: wholesome baby food. I also took some good books out at the library.
It is so much cheaper than buying the jarred food and you are always guaranteed to have food in the house rather than running low and having to run out for the jars. It's just more convenient and I also thought that DDs getting used to the taste of real food would be an easier transition to table food.
I used a food processor and froze the food in trays similar to (from BRU):
When I made it in bulk, I took the cubes out and put them in freezer bags in the freezer.
Have water bottles ready to add to the mixture, makes it thinner for your DS as he probably isn't really chewing yet.
Good luck, HTH!

I used the Super Baby Food book and the Wholesome Baby food website for recipe ideas and tips.
I really only ended up making a minimal amount, but I used my food processor and the ice cube tray method as well.

I would love it! Thank you so much. I'd also love to meet up - but only if that will work for you and with your schedule.

Re: Mom's that make their own baby food - question for ya...
its really quite simple - you just need to steam the food (fruits & veggies), and then puree in the food processor.
I would freeze in ice cube trays and then transer to freezer bags.
I would make big batches every few weeks (and I work )
I didn't use any recipe books, as it was initially single fruits or veggies. Then I'd make combos that sounded good to me, or defrost 2 different cubes and serve together. When she started getting into more "complex" meals, I started feeding her table food in small pieces.

Thank you for these great tips!
What did you use to steam the food?
And thanks for sharing the tip about big patches...I am definitely determined to do this now more than ever.

Re: Mom's that make their own baby food - question for ya...
I JUST got off the phone with my friend who said she bought a book called 100 best baby purees or something like that - some of the recipes sound awesome!!!
I was told you can freeze the food in ice cube trays, and then push out a cube to defrost and your good to go....
we were going to get together and make some recipes - where do you live? You can join us!

What did you use to steam the food?
I have a steamer insert that I place in a pot with a few inches of water.
One of my best batches happened accidentally when I let the water dry up and the pear juices started burning. The resulting carmerlized pear puree was delicious! Al wanted me to make him some!

Annabel Karmel is the babyfood guru. She does the 100 best purees. Its easy, if you spend one evening cooking, you can make enough food for a month.

I have one of those. But I'm confused. I've always thought that when you steam veggies, a lot of the nutrients get lost into the water below...do you add the water into the food to avoid that?

you can use a blender if you dont have a food processor, or you can get the magic bullet or they sell food mills that you do by hand.

yes, you add some of the water back into the puree to get a smoother consistancy.
