Moms who had bad baby blues or PPD...

Do you ever get jealous when you read about or see new moms who are totally in love with their DC?

This is not directed to anyone, but I just feel like I missed that amazing new mom love where you are always in awe of your DC.Chat Icon I love DD and I am really enjoying her now, but I was in such a bad place when she was first born that I don't remember that glow that so many of you ladies have...

Not so much jealous, but in awe - it's just so completely foreign to me, the idea of falling immediately in love with your child, having an easy time, and not experiencing post-partum depression.

I certainly didn't have that experience at all with Alex - but I don't have any regrets about it. It was raw and excruciating, but in my perspective, that's the beauty of life and being human. I look back and laugh about it now Chat Icon

Same here!

I am not jealous at all, but the skeptic in me couldn't understand how anyone could fall in love with DC at first sight--I sometimes thought people were just saying that because that's what you're "supposed" to feel. Now I've learned that each person's experience is different and that's cool. One person's experience is not better than another's...

I will admit, i was jealous and to be honest, i felt that they were just lying about being so happy.

C'mon, how can you be so happy when you arent getting any sleep. I knew I loved DD but not as I wanted to.

Im expecting #2 in April and I hope that I dont get PPD. Plus, I will be taking my Lexapro right after I give birth so it hopefully wont happen. I hated feeling so distant from my beautiful DD.

Re: Moms who had bad baby blues or PPD...

I definitely had a tough time with DD in the beginning. It took me quite a few months to adjust to motherhood and DD was pretty tough as far as sleeping went. She also had a really awful "witching hour" (I should say few hours) everyday. I think I'm more jealous reading about the new moms who get lots of help from their parents/other relatives. That would have made such a huge difference for me. It was so hard living far away from everyone. Actually, I will always be jealous of all of the moms, not just the new moms, who have this kind of help. I've come to terms with the fact that this was our choice to move here and it is what's best for our family overall. We did make the best of it when we lived in Chicago by hiring really good babysitters. Now we just need to find some new ones near our new house.

Sorry to go off on a tangent. I am also jealous of the new moms who have "perfect" babies that are never cranky and sleep the perfect amount of time. Chat Icon Maybe baby #2 (when/if we have one) will be like that. Chat Icon

I don't see how it cannot be so overwhelming and tiring! I just wanted to sleep and feel normal again! No one ever told me about the huge adjustment it would be or how so many relationships would change. It never occured to me that it would be hard to not work after so many years of being so focused!

I never really felt that "glow" or whatever and sometimes feel there are unrealistic expectations!

Re: Moms who had bad baby blues or PPD...

So I am not alone.

Thanks ladies. I needed to know that many of us have felt the same way.

An e-mail exchange with a good friend Chat Icon made me realize that many new moms feel they have to say how great it is for fear of someone attacking them for admitting it is hard. Often times I think we are attacked by someone who is having trouble TTC and thinks we should just be grateful.

Ugh! I wish I could turn back the hands of time and do it all again WITHOUT those dark days.

I didn't have PPD nor did I have the baby blues, but I wasn't in love with my son for quite a few weeks, I was curious about him, and I loved him. But it took me ages to feel all in love with him.

Re: Moms who had bad baby blues or PPD...

Not jealous, angry with myself. Even though I know that it wasn't my fault, I think, "How could you ruin it for yourself? You can never get that time back." But I have to remind myself that I was not in the right frame of mind, but that I took care of myself and that's the most important thing. But I hear where you're coming from, totally.

I have a similar sort of thing going on presently, especially about being in 'a bad place.' DD was born 8/20. I hemorrhaged during her birth, and was too weak to hold her. Then I was hospitalized within a day of coming home for postpartum pre-eclampsia, and was in ICU. I was sent home several days later, only to be back in the hospital for a week!

I feel like I don't know my baby. DH is the only person who can comfort her. To make matters worse, DD was perfect at BFing, but I had to stop due to all the meds I am now on for BP.

Re: Moms who had bad baby blues or PPD...

I never had PPD or baby blues with either of my pregnancies. But, I totally sucked at being pregnant and was in a constant state of anxiety worrying about the baby and possible complications. I always say I had partum anxiety. After giving birth to my second, my OB who I became very friendly with because I saw her so often, said to me "wow you're a different person." I again explained to her how lousy I was at being pregnant.
