Moms who make their own food..i have ?'s

Do you buy organic?

How often do you puree and do you freeze it?

How much do you make at once?

Is it more expensive?

How often are you buying the fruits and veggies?

Do you do chicken and turkey?

I know its a lot of ?'s. Thanks for taking the time.

I found I ran out of ice cube trays and That the food I have made is not going to last me that long and it seems is gonna be more money then buying organic jarred food....

TIA again,

Do you buy organic?
When I can...I go to the farmers market in Union Square (NYC) to get some of my fruits and veggies. I try to get organic in the supermarket but if I don't see it then I will get regular.

How often do you puree and do you freeze it?

I puree about every two weeks. I freeze everything except what will be used that day or the next.

How much do you make at once?
I make about 2 or 3 different foods.

Is it more expensive?
Not in my opinion. I can make a huge amount of sweet potato puree with just four sweet potatoes. I would say about 12 cubes...so that's 12-1oz servings.

How often are you buying the fruits and veggies?
Right before I puree. Today I picked up some pears, sweet potatoes and dried apricots to puree tonight.

Do you do chicken and turkey?
Not yet.

I found I ran out of ice cube trays...

Donna - I freeze the food and then remove it from the tray and store in ziploc bags. That way I can reuse the trays. If I have just way too much I also freeze inside small glad containers.

Re: Moms who make their own food..i have ?'s

This is a great thread. I plan to start making my own this weekend and have been wondering if it's any cheaper to do so. I plan to use all organic, I know that much.

ETA: A few of the ladies on here have been so helpful to me with advice (Ang & Chelle, specifically), I see Ang answered already.

Do you buy organic? Yes, whenever possible

How often do you puree and do you freeze it? I used to puree and freeze about once a week (now DS eats table foods)

How much do you make at once? I would make about 2-4 freezer trays of whatever fruit or veggie I was pureeing

Is it more expensive? No, it is so much less expensive than buying all those jars

How often are you buying the fruits and veggies? I used to buy once a week

Do you do chicken and turkey? I never found it necessary to puree chicken or turkey. I think DS was 9-10 months old when I introduced it and I would just cut it into small pieces.

My favorite resourse is www.wholesomebabybabyfoods.com.

Do you buy organic?

Yes, as much as I could. I always buy either organic meat or no-hormone, all natural.

How often do you puree and do you freeze it?

I used to do it once a month - 6 weeks.

Is it more expensive?

No, much cheaper.

How often are you buying the fruits and veggies?

Whenever I planned to make the food. Frozen lasts forever so I never worried about that.

Do you do chicken and turkey?

Eventually I did all meats (poultry, veal, beef, pork) but not until they were 7-8 months.

Do you buy organic?
When I can, but I not always. If there is a good sale on something I will buy it organic or not.

How often do you puree and do you freeze it?
About every 2 weeks

How much do you make at once?
usually 2 fruits and 2 veggies

Is it more expensive?
I don't find it to be

Do you do chicken and turkey?
Not pureed....DS is 9 1/2 mths now so I give him tiny pieces of cooked turkey and chicken, but I don't freeze it.

When DS was younger, I used ice cube trays...I would pop them out into ziploc bags. Now, DS eats a much bigger serving so I bought 4oz tupperware and freeze them in there. Hope that helped!

Re: Moms who make their own food..i have ?'s

I always buy organic. The chemicals in the traditional food are released more quickly or with greater absorbency when juiced/pureed.

I make only a few bits at a time...like enough for 2 days. I keep it in the fridge. I personally do not like to put the food in the freezer, b/c i hate the process of defrosting. I also still have the jarred foods (organic Earth's Best) until we are completely settled (we are moving), but I plan to go 100% to homemade, especially when it comes to introducing meats. I put the foods in a thermos especially for baby foods.

ETA: I buy organic for myself anyway, so it is not too much of a stretch for me to buy one more apple or a slightly larger mango, etc.

Do you buy organic? usually I did, there are some things that I couldn'y find but I tried my best.

How often do you puree and do you freeze it?

I did it about once a week, but I had to make 2x as much as most.

How much do you make at once?
I would make 3 trays at once I think

Is it more expensive?
IMO, no I thought the jars were very expensive.

How often are you buying the fruits and veggies?
Once a week, there was some stuff i did each day when I made it,like babaas and avocados

Do you do chicken and turkey?
I didn't since they didn't really like meat until over a year and I was fine with that since I am a vegetarian.

I found I ran out of ice cube trays and That the food I have made is not going to last me that long and it seems is gonna be more money then buying organic jarred food....

I would pop them out and store in a ziploc bag so I could reuse the trays when I was making food.

Re: Moms who make their own food..i have ?'s

I wanted to say I am using Ziplocs but the amount of say carrots I made at one time had me using 5-6 ice cube trays and then I had another veggie steaming and no trays b/c the carrots were still freezing.

Now Noah is eating about 4 cubes a meal. So to me, the cubes are gonna go FAST. And the fruit and veggies I bought cost me b/c I will only use organic, I would rather use organic jarred then non organic fresh...Im not seeing yet how it would cost less , but Im gonna keep it up.

Thanks for the replies, it helps a LOT!

Do you buy organic?
Yes, as much as I could.

How often do you puree and do you freeze it?
I did it whenever I had time, and mostly on the weekends when DH was around.

Is it more expensive?
No, much cheaper.

How often are you buying the fruits and veggies?
I bought a lot of frozen foods and those would last awhile. The fresh I would buy when I planned on making it.

Do you do chicken and turkey?
Yes but it didn't go so well, so I opted to wait until they were 8 or 9 months to give them table meat cut up very small. The jarred organic chicken and rice and chicken and apples was really the only jarred meat they ate for a few months. The rest was nasty!

How often do you puree and do you freeze it? I puree batches every 6 weeks and freeze right after the food cools down.

Is it more expensive? No

How often are you buying the fruits and veggies? once every sex weeks I buy a bunch

Do you do chicken and turkey? I will start chicken when she's 8 months.

Re: Moms who make their own food..i have ?'s

Do you buy organic?
not really

How often do you puree and do you freeze it?
I make a new fruit or vegetable every week, puree and freeze it then. If I find something she really likes, I'll make an extrea batch during the week (if there's time) just in case she doesn't like the new food.

How much do you make at once?
We're still trying foods out, so I only make one thing at a time.

Is it more expensive?
No, because we usually buy things in bulk at Costco, and we eat the remainder for our lunches and dinners.

How often are you buying the fruits and veggies?
Once a week we'll buy something new.

Do you do chicken and turkey?
Not yet. I'm not looking forward to the meats because I think that's kind of gross.....but I'll do it when I have to
