moms who pump a lot

how did you find out what settings work best for you?

I have an ameda pump (two settings: cycles and suction) and recently returned to work. I'm finding the setting I use right now (max cycles with about 60% suction) are beginning to hurt Chat Icon

I'm worried that if I turn it down too far, my boobs won't be emptied completely and my production will go down even more than it has already...

please help! thanks

I pumped a lot and I just whacked it up to the highest it would go. I started lower, and then realised that the strongest suction was the best for me.

I say just try it, and if you need more suction, just keep turning it up to 11!

Ditto. I pump all the way up.

I'm finding the more I pump, the more tender I am... I would like to go down if possible... just wondering which setting is best to adjust Chat Icon

I have a Medela PIS, but my settings are 100% suction and a medium speed...it works best for me and if I have it too pumping too quick, it hurts me as well. The same settings won't be best for every woman.

I seriously thought I was doing something a little wrong... and you just confirmed my suspicion... I'll try reducing the cycles and up the suction to whatever I can stand.... thanks!!!!!

Re: moms who pump a lot

You could also increase the amount of time on the pump. It's a drag but it helped me for the short time I pumped. What did not help was having another mother in the NICU enter my little private pumping room and then turn up the suction on my machine while I was hooked up because she said that would help me.

I never went past 50% suction, maybe that's why I never was able to pump that much Chat Icon

If it's hurting you, you may also need larger breast shields. That is what helped me. I was to the point of bleeding before a LC told me I needed larger shields.

Same here...I always had it at the highest setting from the get-go.

Re: moms who pump a lot

I pumped full time for 1 year with Molly and for 3 months after I brought Jason home from Ethiopia.
I never used the highest setting. A higher setting does not = more milk. You should use the setting that does NOT hurt.
