how many ounces does he drink a day?

i should have asked all of these questions in one post sorry! Chat Icon

It's okay. Chat Icon He used to drink 5-6 ounces at a feeding (that's when he slept through the night).

Now it has been 3-4 ounces at a feeding, every 3 hours. So probably about 28 ounces a day, depending on the day.

We've tried to space it out to every 4 hours, but he won't have it. When he's hungry... watch out! Chat Icon

As for the belly, he HATES tummy time with a passion so i think that idea is out. Chat Icon

Have you tried the belly? Rylan hated tummy time too but slept better on his belly.

No other advice because i'm going through the same thing.

Re: Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

I was talking to a mom of twins the other day. She said they decided at 4 months their DDs should be sleeping through the night without a paci.

She said the put them in the crib...walked out...and stuck to their guns. She said if you are going to do it, do it all the way. The minute you give in you've made it worse for the baby and it will be harder for them to console themself.

I considered doing it myself, but I don't think I'm ready yet.

Are you putting him down while he's still awake? Or is he passed out and you sneak him in to the crib?

No he gets put down drowsy. Sometimes he's passed out and sometimes he's awake and goes to sleep on his own.

I also wanted to add that my chunker was eating 7 ounces every 3 to 4 hours and lately he barely finishes 5 ounces. He gets distracted, chews on the nipple. So I think he's hungrier during the night now. I am attributing it to teething - when I have no answers I blame everything on teething.Chat Icon

My DD was an early teether (first two teeth about 5 months) and I remember the doctor saying no, nothing coming in any time soon and literally that two days later she had her 2 bottom teeth - so you never know! Could me a zillion different things. I'm just still a sucker to my little man and get too upset to hear him cry so I do whatever it takes for now. You will see that it will be a distant memory a few months from now.

Re: Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

Here I go with more questions - I'm sorry.

What time are you putting him to bed at night? What time are you starting the bedtime routine? Does he take a paci?

I would def. get a sound machine - put that in the room with him. They are cheap and sold at BRU for like 20 bucks.

If your ped said you could do CIO - and you want to do it - then like the pp said - you just have to stick to it. It may take a few nights of him getting up and crying in the middle of the night - but I do believe that it will eventually work.

You should FM Ang-Rich - I believe that she did CIO earlier with her son also - and it worked out great.

It's all trial and error - what works now - may not work a month from now - they are constantly changing on us and keeping us on our toes.

I don't know what time he goes to bed yet (obviously lol) but maybe he needs to go down earlier. Since Jack was born at 6-6:30 he was always ready for bed. Granted, when he was younger he wouldn't sleep through the night - but his internal alarm clock goes off at 6:30 every night. Even now - 16 months later - he is in his crib by 6:30.

Once you find what works for you just run with it!

Honestly, if this was my child I would get up in the middle of the night and comfort him. I was told that they could still be hungry ing the middle of the night at this age. I would probably allow for one feeding and night and then comfort him the rest of the time through rocking or rubbing his back. I would not do CIO yet. Good luck whatever you decide

Read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.

I personally do not believe that 4 months old is too young, but I know many people disagree.

My son has been a very good sleeper since 10 weeks (knock on wood) and I thank that book.

Totally agree with all points.
I've followed it from the beginning and it has worked for us so well.

Nah keep the questions coming... i'll try anything at this point!

We do have a sound machine in his room already that we use.

He gets a bath around 6:15-6:30, followed by a bottle and will be in bed by 6:45-7pm.

Yes he does take a pacifier.

I don't mind 1 feeding a night. Not at all. The problem is him getting up 4 times a night. His ped told us that at his age, he should not be getting up that much. Also he used to sleep through the night, so i know he can go 11 hours without eating. But i definitely don't mind the 1 feeding at all. Chat Icon

I started reading it and to be honest, I find it a little confusing. Not confusing per say... but i find that there are too many IF's. Although i really haven't gotten too far in the book yet, so i guess i'll keep reading.

My dd also slept through early on but then changed. I knew why, habit. She was a nurser and wanted to nurse all night. As soon as I broke the habit, she had no problems. I made my hubby put her to bed at night and get up with her for most wakings for a couple of days and the wakings diminished substantially. But I could not break the habit completely until 6 months when I followed advice from Healthy Sleep. Happy Child and Ferber. Both good books. Good luck.

Re: Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

I did CIO at 4 months and it worked for us.

DS did the same exact thing Jacen did. He slept great from about 8 weeks to about 15 weeks (gradually going down from 1 feeding at 3AM, to 4AM, to 5AM, and so on till he was sleeping through the night till 6-7AM), then at 16 weeks, he started waking up at 2-3 AM, then again an hour later and again.

We did CIO for 3-4 nights and he was great for about 2-3 weeks. Then he had a cold and was teething so he was up in the middle of the night again.

If I knew he was sick (cold) I went in and comforted him. when he was teething I gave him tylenol at night.

And then we would have to CIO again after these instances, but now, he's back on track again and has been great for over a month.

He may be teething. I think it was a good 3-4 weeks where I didn't see a thing but DS was chewing on anything he could get his hands on, crying, and then one day, poof, 2 teeth popped out of nowhere.

Are you getting any stretches at all where you think CIO may be working? Maybe for a week, and then something throws him off, like teething?

I think CIO works, but there are definitely things that throw it off where you have to reinforce it.
