Monitors: audio, video or both?
Will you be getting an audio monitor, video monitor or both?
Which brand(s) are you getting and why?
We're house hunting now and will hopefully find one either before the baby is born or within the first few months after the baby is born. As of now, the baby will be in our room. If we find a house soon, I still plan to keep the baby in our room for the first few months. I'm not sure whether it makes sense to get a video monitor in this situation. Thoughts?

Re: Monitors: audio, video or both?
I registered for a Summer Video Monitor. My sister has this one and is very happy with it. At first DH thought it was a waste to get a video monitor, then he saw it in the store and decided he liked the idea.
this is the one we registered for:

I live by my Summer Handheld video monitor and DS is 14 months old. This was by far the best thing we got!

I have the Summer Handheld and have been using it for over 2 yrs. I love it!!!!!! I am getting the extra camera for this baby.
I also used the Angelcare with the Video Monitor when he was an infant. I wouldn't have been able to sleep if I didn't have both.

Re: Monitors: audio, video or both?
I have the Graco iMonitor, digital video monitor. It is a godsend. I could have never survived DS's infancy without it, lol... Actually it came in handy AGAIN just recently when I switched DS to a toddler bed, I could see when he got out and would call out to him to get back in bed.

Re: Monitors: audio, video or both?
neither!
We're in an apartment, so Scone will seldom be out of sight... BUT, we did want to get a motion monitor (one that goes off if it no longer senses Scone breathing). I've heard it has several false alarms, but we're fine with that, as long as it always goes off when Scone isn't moving at all.
That way, when Scone sleeps, we'll be able to sleep with a clear mind!bebecare angel sounds motion monitor

Re: Monitors: audio, video or both?
Lemme offer a warning
If you live in a small apt like I do.. or if you're 'hooked up' with wifi, you may get interference.
There's a lot of reviewed on monitors with videos that just don't work due to interference.
I wanted a monitor but figured we were in SUCH a small space why bother.. HA! The day we brought her home we went and got a sound monitor. I can hear her gurgle and whimper.
We made sure our monitor was DTEC 6.0 technology and would not have interference from other wireless outputs, microwaves, etc.

Re: Monitors: audio, video or both?
Just realize that the range on the video monitor is not far. It works fine in two story houses but if you have a sprawling ranch (one story) like we do, it may not work that well.
We had the Summer hand held and had so many problems with reception(our room is all the way across on the other side of the house) that we switched to a cheapy audio one with no problems.
But the video one was cool at other people's houses and on vacation when it worked well.

Re: Monitors: audio, video or both?
just an audio one. We're in a small condo so we should be a ok. I only see us using it when we're outside on our patio entertaining and the baby will be inside sleeping.

DH laughed at me even suggesting a video monitor. So we got the Sony one.

Re: Monitors: audio, video or both?
I didn't realize how important the video one was before I had him.
Now I look at what he's doing in the monitor before going in there. I don't need to open the door for every little whimper or cry. My bedroom is right across the hall and it has been such a lifesaver. There have been numerous times when his cry sounded like he was ready to be taken out (which I would have done if not for the monitor) and then he falls back to sleep.

Same here. I say it all of the time. This was the BEST gift I received at my shower. I gave me piece of mind as a new neurotic mom and now I can watch my toddler get out of her bed and make sure she is safe. Worth every penny!!!!!!!!

Re: Monitors: audio, video or both?
Thanks everyone.
I apologize if this is a dumb question. I plan to use the crib (2nd floor) at night and the pack 'n play (1st floor) for naps during the day. If I buy a Summer video monitor to use with the crib, do I need to buy a separate audio monitor to use when the baby is in the pack 'n play?

Only if you want to hear every sound and plan on being on a different floor. Otherwise you would have to move the monitor every time you used it. Kind of a pain...

Re: Monitors: audio, video or both?
I really like having a video monitor. If I hear something I just flip on the screen and make sure she's ok rather than worrying that she's caught in her bumper, or got a leg stuck in the bars or something. It's saved me a lot of trips into the room during naps and at night.
One morning I was watching her play on the monitor before I went to go get her and saw her sit up by herself for the first time.
