Re: moral dilemma

I don't think this happens frequently enough to have a solid opinion on it. But I think if I got home with it, I wouldn't know what to do. I feel like it would be more trouble than it would be worth to bring it back. (What if they thought I stole it or were unappreciative or something???)

If I was in the store, I would definitely say something.

We were eating dinner out the other night and the waitress completely did not charge for any item of mine. (Only charged for DH's meal.) We had to say something. It wasn't a lot of money. But still.

ETA: We bought a painting at an art show once and I had to argue with the woman that she didn't charge me enough. I was like: "Fine, you make a mistake and don't want to take my money, then I'll just keep it!"

Re: moral dilemma

I tend to say something in store if I am not charged (DH hates that I do this). If I realize it when I get home, I just keep it and don't say anything. I agree with the others who have said that laziness prevents them from returning it.

Re: moral dilemma

this happened to me yesterday and I didnt say anything and I saw it happen at the store. I was at Joanns fabric and crafts and bought a candle holder and some candles. The cashier must have thought that the candles were part of the price, out them in the bag and didnt ring them up.

I wasnt 100% sure though. When I got in the car I realized he had actually rung up the candle holder as $2 more then it was marked so I considered that my "extra" payment and just left.

I wouldnt likely ever go back to a store ...I would be considering myself lucky to get something for free as horrible as it may be.

Re: moral dilemma

This happened to me at Michael's Craft store and I never said anything. I was buying votive holders for the wedding. The girl was on her cell phone gabbing away to her husband or something and I had a million things in the cart and was in a rush.
They were 3/$1 and I bought $25 worth (75 votive holders). I told the girl that I had 75 votives which means $25, instead she rang up 25 votives at 33 cents each for total of $8.25 Chat Icon I didn't say anything.

Re: moral dilemma

well - I didn't say anything about the jeans - because a few days before I dropped my wallet somewhere and someone stole about $50 in cash - so I thought maybe it was my kharma paying me back - until I got a $35 dollar parking ticket today - ugh!!!

Re: moral dilemma

I wouldn't go back-- their mistake. It's what they call "shrinkage".

ETA-- this just happened to us with Crate & Barrel-- we bought two lamps that needed to be special ordered. When they finally came in- we needed to go pick them up at the store-- we took them home, set them up and discovered when we were admiring them that the lamp shades were two different colors. We called C&B and told them about this and scheduled a time for them to deliver new lamp shades and for us to give back the old ones- very accommodating.

When they delivered them-- we didn't realize until everything was unpacked-- they gave us two complete lamps- not just shades. I originally wanted to call them-- and DH said- it's their mistake- so we keep them. We have no spot for them now-- so they are still in the boxes and un-touched. Anyway-- weeks later of course-- they have discovered their mistake and are now calling us to get them- I wish we just nipped it in the bud-- but, DH talked me into it.

so I went to old navy the other day to buy a few things - when I got home I realized they didn't charge me for one of the items ($20 value).

When you are not charged for something do you bring it back - or is it their mistake - your gain?

What if you realize it in the store - on the spot - do you say something then?

On the spot- yes I have on many occasions.
Im home- no Im not going back out

I think I am worse than you. I use self check out at Stop and Shop, and you have to weigh the item, and then press the screen to let them know which item it is.

If it happened in the store, I would say something, not if I got home and noticed, though.
