Mortgage Shopping Question

DH and I are in no way ready to buy a house. But we are trying to learn as much as we can now, before we begin the process. I'm curious to see what kind of rates we could get from various banks and/or brokers. I also want to get an idea of how much we would be approved for and what our mortgage could potentially look like. Is it possible to work with the banks and/or brokers now before we're ready to buy? I understand the figures wouldn't be set in stone, but I'm hoping it would give me an idea of how much we need to put aside, etc.

Re: Mortgage Shopping Question

If you aren't ready to buy at all, I would say don't bother going to the banks. Bankrate.com has plenty of calculators online that show you how much house you can afford according to all your bills. We used this before we were ready to buy a house and found it to be pretty accurate.

Just continue to save for a nice sized down payment and keep your bills under control.

I agree. Rates are quite volatile right now. If you need MTG info I work for a bank so feel free to FM me. I could let you know any info you need. But as far as applying, etc....wait until you are ready to buy.
