Mother of Boys who had diaper rash

My DS has a diaper rash that is really bad. He screams every time I have to change his diaper or wipe him down. I tried putting him in the tub but that was pure torture. He is also extremely swollen down there. This is the first diaper rash that I am dealing with and I am not sure really what to do. Should I be doing something other than putting layers of desitin on him....

Let him run around without a diaper on for as long as you can to dry it out. A lightly salted bath is also supposed to be really good.

For diaper rash I use a wash cloth with warm water to clean (no wipes) then air dry a bit and apply triple paste.

For really raw diaper rash I have used Lotrimin (for jock itch) but talk to your doctor first about that.

Re: Mother of Boys who had diaper rash

Usually baths helped my son when he had diaper rashes. Try triple paste, some of the mom's here swear by it. I bought it and it cleared up diaper rash quickly.

Although I don't have a boy, I just wanted to tell you that I had great success with "Butt Paste." Its thicker and seemed to work right away.

Hope it goes away soon. Chat Icon

That's what I'm doing right now. And it's a pretty bad one. The triple paste helped a lot!

Re: Mother of Boys who had diaper rash

my DS has a bad rash as well, Dr prescribed a cream to apply 3 times a day and to apply triple paste on top of it.

My problem is I can't get DS to lay still long enough, he is always trying to roll over and if not that then he is trying to scratch the rash and get the cream all over his hand Chat Icon Chat Icon So the rash isn't going away Chat Icon

How do you keep your DC to lay still? Toys aren't working anymore for me Chat Icon

The only cream that has worked for my son is Aveeno. Desitin and Balmex did nothing for my son.

Otherwise like the other girls said, a bath or letting him dry out is the best option.

Re: Mother of Boys who had diaper rash

This works really good - it has something to do with the milk enzymes:

Warm milk in a bowl and then use cotton balls to squeze warm milk all over the affected area. I usually laid the baby down on the floor with a towel or 2 under his butt to catch the milk. Just keep soaking the cotton balls and squeezing them till the milk is gone. Then let it air out a bit - it doesn't have to be running around, just let it dry. The use cream - like frosting a cake, don't be afraid to use a ton and put the diaper on I've tried Triple Paste and Butt Paste and both work well. My DD's diaper rash always responded well the Butt Paste but it was thinner so I usually applied some Desitin as well when I used it.

Someone told me about the milk a long time ago and it really gives them relief. I asked the ped about it one day and he even said you can use milk of magnesia from the bottle as well.

GL. The poor little guy!!!

If nothing works, your ped can prescribe a compound that as a steroid in it. It's pretty expensive even with insurance but it worked very well and quickly but you can't use too much bc of the steroid obviously.

Re: Mother of Boys who had diaper rash

I just put a call in to my doctor for my 2 1/2 week old DS's rash and he said there might be some yeast there too, so put some monistat on first...then put triple paste on top of that. HTH - I am going to go buy some to try later.

Cailen's turned into a fungus when he was little - my ped prescribed an amazing cream and it went away within days - maybe have the ped check it out...

Exactly what we used to do when DS was little. It seemed to clear it up pretty quickly. Using wash cloths can be a pain, but I think it makes a big difference.

Re: Mother of Boys who had diaper rash

When Thomas had a bad diaper rash and Desitin and Balmex weren't working, the ped said the use Butt Paste. She also said to try not to wipe it all off during changes, just add more to what is already there (pee pee changes). She said if that didn't clear up in four days, to call and she would prescribe something.

Re: Mother of Boys who had diaper rash

Thank you ladies for all the responses. I ended up taking him to the dr yesterday after I changed a diaper and saw that his unmentionables and butt was bleeding from skin coming off. Anyway it ended up being a fungal infection and the dr prescribed cream for him with the addition of triple paste. So far it has been 24 hours and there has only been a slight improvement. The poor little guys cries when he sits or tries to play. I am hoping that it starts to clear up by tonight.

Re: Mother of Boys who had diaper rash

If it's really bad I use triple paste every change and lotrimin (twice a day), the lotrimin is for yeast, the first time I took him to the dr and turns out it was yeast and the lotrimin worked like a charm, now I know what they look like.
