Motherless Daughters
My mom would think about her mom right before Mother's Day because her birthday is a always a few days before. She grew up as a motherless daughter from the age of 10. She also became one of the most fantastic, giving mothers.
To those that are having a hard time this week with the Mother's Day posts & this weekend, I just wanted to offer
I'm sure that your moms are proud of the women you've become.

Re: Motherless Daughters
aw Barbara - that is so sweet.
My Mother also lost her Mom - she was 17, her Mom was only 37. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage caused by Lupus. She left behind 4 children - my Mom was the oldest, the youngest was 13. Mom raised her siblings. Even as a newlywed, she had her youngest brother living with her.
Mom is grateful that her Mother got to know and love my Dad. They were high school sweethearts, so Mom's Mom knew him well, and truly loved him.
I find it hard to refer to her as Grandma, because I never met her. We have very few photos (Mom's father went a little nutso after her death and pawned her belongings. One of the only things my Mom has is the cross her mother wore as she died), but everyone that knew her tells me I have her eyes and mouth.
Its hard to imagine what my mother went through, but I know that I couldn't ask for anyone better.

Re: Motherless Daughters
I remember my first fathers day wtihout my dad. I still had 2 grandfathers so we celebrated. And then the first fathers day without any of them. I promise, it does get easier.
Especially for the mothers, this day is not a tribute to both, your mother and you.

Re: Motherless Daughters
As a motherless daughter for 11 years now, I must recommend the book 'motherless daughters'. It's a tearjerker, but makes you realize you're not alone.
Although I would not read it this time of year, wait until September.
To get thru this season, I will quote the great Pink Floyd "I have become comfortably numb"

Re: Motherless Daughters
thank you for posting this. This will be my 6th Mom's day without my amazing, incredible mom (i'm tearing up as I type... ) but me and my dad go spend it with my grandma in Florida. I always wonder if I'll be happy on Mother's Day again when I'm a mom.

Re: Motherless Daughters
I've been a motherless daughter for the overwhelming majority of my life and actually have very few memories of her as I was eight when she passed, suddenly and violently in an accident. I was lucky that I had so many friend's and classmate's moms, techers and others who were very loving to both my brother and I.
Mother's Day was always very hard on us as everyone makes reference to it and rarely thinks that some people don't have a mom to celebrate.
In recent years it was doubly difficult as all of my friends have been moms for years now and I wasn't and as I approach the age she was when she died, I'm one year away.
I can finally say that this is the first year I am truly celebrating with all of my heart.
Happy Mother's Day to all and to all of those men and women who are not mothers but who fufill that role for so many children

Re: Motherless Daughters
I lost my mom when I was 14. So I never celebrated Mother's Day after that year. For this year, I will finally celebrate in 15 years with my two wonderful babies.
thank you Barb, you are sweet.
