Motorcycles

Most of our friends have them and go riding together. My brother has one and he took his girlfriend on a riding trip this weekend. But this is one thing that I do not feel comfortable with at all. DH is dying to get one, but it makes me sick to my stomach.

We have gone skydiving, rafting, hang gliding..etc...but I am terrified to get on a bike.

Anyone have a bike or share in my fear?

Re: Motorcycles

DH & I both love to ride, but I am rather afraid to ride on Long Island recently. Cars just do not respect or pay attention to bikes, and with the recent problems on the highway, I feel like some motorists will go out of their way to make riding difficult for all bikers.

DH wants to get another bike so badly - as do I , but not here Chat Icon
ETA: we would both get cruising/touring bikes. He wants a Honda VTX & I want a Triumph.

I used to and then when DH got a bike I went on and I loved it. He bought a cruiser though and not some race bike so I think that helped. He never was into going fast, just got on to enjoy the ride.

Re: Motorcycles

Absolutely NOT. He will never have one...

My DH talks about getting one all the time. I tell him that I I'd like to have a husband in my old age...

I'm also biased because my grandfather lost his leg on a motorcycle.

see that is what scares me. DH said if I ride with him then he will get a Triumph cruiser. But if i am not going to ride then he wants a crotch rocket. He is a crazy driver all ready. I will not ride, but do I have a right to stop him? I swear it is always me who is the rule setting wife/girlfriend. All of my friends just get on the back of the bike and have fun, when it comes to this I am a complete stick in the mud.

And even if DH was a great driver, a bad driver might be in the SUV behind him, and in that accident, DH wouldn't stand a chance for surviving

Re: Motorcycles

When we first wanted to get back into riding (I used to ride as a kid - without a license, of course Chat Icon ) I told him the pre-requisites were that he had to take the safety course (Traumas) and learn how to ride defensively, offensively, and how to dump a bike without getting hurt. But now that there are so many people who ride poorly, I feel like all people who ride are being perceived as a nuisance, and this is what is scaring me. Or maybe I am older and more freaked out by stuff. Either way it su cks because I really loved ridingChat Icon

DH's uncle has a harley, and they put his 3 yr old cousin on it for a ride around the block, when he got off, he slipped and got 2nd degree burns on his legChat Icon DH's cousin was in sooooo much pain, I thought it was so negligent.

motorcycles aren't for everyone and I'm a firm believer if you are a reckless driver you'll be an even more reckless motorcycler. And that can spell disaster. A 22-year old kid in Huntington was killed last week because he was reckless and drove right into a car. It's so sad.
I drive an SUV and I am constantly pulling back, moving out of the way for motorcycles and smaller cars. I am the bigger heavier car and I can really hurt someone and people have no idea how close they are sometimes to me creaming them. It's not about getting there first, it's about getting there alive. I'm a fast driver and I say that - I may be fast, but I'm never ever reckless. OK, enough ranting from me. I really hate driving lately, it seems that everyone is an animal on the roads.

Exactly. My BIL is a good driver and had a terrible accident not long ago when a guy ran a stop sign and hit him. My friend's brother was hit on his motorcycle by a drunk driver and died at the hospital. I would rather be known as the witch of a wife who won't let him get one than the widow who did.

Yeah, I am going to stick with my no, or I will get a severe ulcer from the thought of him on one.

DH used to have one- I'm glad he doesn't anymore even though I wouldn't mind 'cruising' around out here. just too many A-holes on the road.

We went the speed limit (when the cops were around) Chat Icon

Seriously, we had a nice ride. The Goldwind does help with it's intercom and 6 CD changer etc.

Re: Motorcycles

Last fall when it was raining my father was stopped at a light in his SUV. A motorcyclist behind him tried to stop, skidded, and went under my dad's SUV, smashing his face on the bumper. He broke all bones in his legs, arms, and face.

My husband has a '97 Triumph Speed Triple.

I don't mind it so much because it actually just collects dust in the garage. Chat Icon
Maybe 3x a year he gets to go for a ride with his friends, and they aren't in the city or LI where I would be more nervous of other idiots on the road... still I guess anything could happen.

I don't really like this bike, he had an old beat up Honda before this one and we took a trip on it, it was real comfy and SLOW LOL
This thing, the first time he took me for a ride 8 years ago, I almost flew off the back when he took off. I never went on it again.

Now with the baby, I wouldn't want to go for rides together anyway, in case something happened to the both of us. Chat Icon
