Re: Moving away from family....
This past November we packed up and moved to Florida... 99% of our family is in NY, and on LI--
Things have been good.. sometimes it is sad, but when we miss NY, we get on a cheap Southwest flight and in a couple of hours we are home.... As time passes it gets easier... the first couple of months are always the hardest... Good Luck with your decision!

Re: Moving away from family....
I lived in California for 5 years. I moved out there to be with DH while he was finishing grad school, and he wanted to stay out there as it offered better opportunities in his field.
I agreed, as long as it wasn't going to be forever. I figured 2-3 years. I can't believe it was 5! Didn't seem that long at all and some days I miss SF and our independence terribly.
It was a great experience and I'm glad we had it. There were good and bad things about being so far away - you miss a lot, but you also can focus on you and your DH without the usual interference and drama of family.
We flew back and forth often to stay close, but I always knew we'd make our way back to NY (which was god and bad, since we never knew just when we'd go move it was hard to not feel like you're always in limbo)
Both our families are here and I didn't want to have kids without our parents close by. Also I missed my sisters terribly and hated the idea of them getting involved or marrying someone I barely knew.
Maybe you can make the change for now, but put a timeline together for when you'd come back. You may never want to come back...

Re: Moving away from family....
Well the decision is we're going and will try it out. I can't believe we're going to do it but we'll both have regrets if we don't.
We took a trip there last week and it helped to really see what it is like. We went house shopping which was kind of fun but sad because I know it's not here

Re: Moving away from family....
I know the way you are feeling with your family and your niece(s)... I had the came problem... I make sure for all the exciting events,or events I wish I could be there... (first day of Kindergarten, tonsils removed, new house...) I send my nieces a cookie bouquet.. Its adorable, and delicious, and you can personalize them... Not to mention, as they are getting older they have come down to see us several times... and they love takig the trip.. Who knows you may still be known as the cool aunt! Things will work out.. and fall into place soon! Best wishes with your move! When will you be leaving??

Re: Moving away from family....
My husband and I are moving to Illinois, in the beginning of November. We are moving because my husband is getting transferred there. But it's a great opportunity for us. All of my family is here.
