Re: Moving in with parents
We just did this with my IL's. We lived with them for 2 years to save money for a house. We also paid them minimal rent to cover their increase in expenses.
It worked out great for us all. We also shared a kitchen and we had no problems for the most part in regards to privacy or anything like that. When we went upstairs, that was it - they always called up to us if they needed anything - they never came up without asking.
All in all, we were very lucky that they allowed us to move back in with them. We were able to save for our downpayment and were able to buy a house in the timeframe that we wanted. There's no way we would have been able to do it if we stayed oin our apartment.

I say, sometimes if the opportunity is there, especially if will allow you a big jump financially towards a house, i say the sacrafice is worth it. As long as you guys still have a private space and private time to yourselves.
I say do it, but make sure there are ground rules regarding privacy and alone time.

Re: Moving in with parents
I think the shared kitchen thing doesn't sound horrible now, but could get a little annoying.
80% of our time at home is spent in the kitchen... experimenting with meals, hanging out, getting beers it would be weird to cross paths with my parents each time even though I love them ALOT.
Is there no way for them to put a kitchen in the extension?

Re: Moving in with parents
we got a small fridge ( not a dorm size but not a full size either ) and a 20 inch electric stove in the apartment - maybe you can look into that!

Re: Moving in with parents
I would do it with my parents, but not with IL's. If your parents are really as laid back as you say and your DH is on board, go for it. The worst thing is that you save a little and have to bail and get an apt again. You'll never know unless you try it.
Just as long as you get privacy, i.e. send your parents out to dinner once in a while to say "thank you" for what they are doing, but also so you can cook a nice dinner together

Re: Moving in with parents
I think if you and your DH agree that is what matters. As long as it is what you both want then I say go for it.

Re: Moving in with parents
We're living in my parents 2-family home..our rent is $700 all included utilities...
We've saved over $70K and now have a downpayment for a house!
Best decision we EVER made!

Re: Moving in with parents
I would say go for it. Better than struggling financially and having to ask them for help. Also opportunities like that so save money don't come often so I would jump at it

Re: Moving in with parents
I get along GREAT with my parents and see them all the time. I get along well with my in-laws, too...
But I am far, far too private of a person to ever move in with them -- or even to move in across the street.
I think you need to evaluate the dynamics and have long discussions with your DH about it.
I also think you need to have long discussions with your parents spelling out exactly what will be expected, etc. I've heard way too many stories of arrangeements like this not working out b/c people didn't discuss everything openly up front.
So, just make sure you know what you are getting into and all parties agree on the expectations and boundaries.

I have wonderful/generous parents, Dh and I both have a strong relationship with them and YES, if we were in your position, we would move in with them and not think twice about it

Re: Moving in with parents
My parents did this for us and we have been here 2 years. We love our apt, it's bigger than what many of our friends have and it gives us the opportunity to save money! Now my parents are spending 3 months out of the year in Florida and are happy to have us here in the house. For us it's a situation that really works and we are all hoping that we will buy the house when they are ready for something smaller.
ETA: We have our own bathroom, kitchen, spare room, master bedroom, office etc. although if we had to I don't think it would be awful to share.

Re: Moving in with parents
i say do it.. you may never have an opportunity like this again to save a great sum of money. IMO you want as much to put down on a house as you can possible get so you don't have to struggle!

Re: Moving in with parents
dh and i have been married almost 2 yrs, and right after we go married we lived in his co-op in queens. We moved this past october, 2 weeks before ds was born into my parents 4 story house, and live above them. It's great. They babysit for us all the time since dh and i work full time, and they love spending time with their grandson. We live rent free, and just sold our co-op and saving up money to buy a house in 4-5 yrs. They don't get into our business, and it really is a great help having them around. I say if your relationship is great, go for it.
