Moving to Nassau - Need some Guidance

Hello,

My husband and I are looking to move from Queens to Nassau by next Sept. We have five year old twin girls that will be entering 1st grade when we intend on being in the new house. Of course, schools are very important. I thought I would reach out to this forum. Right now I am mostly researching South Shore neighborhoods, North shore seems a little pricey. Towns that I am looking into are Oceanside, Bellemore, Merrick and Levittown. I have been doing a lot of research and do intend to visit some of the schools. However, just wanted to get some insight from the parents from this forum.

TIA!!!

Re: Moving to Nassau - Need some Guidance

I live in south levittown (wantagh border) and I like it here. My 8 year old son and my twin 5 year old boys have been in special education in the district for a while now and I really can't say anything bad about the district.

Good luck in your search!

Edited to add that I feel really safe in this town.

I'm in south Levittown too. Moved here when DD started 6th grade, so I can't comment on the elementary schools, but I can tell you that Salk Middle school has been great for the past 2 years! She adjusted well moving to the new district as well as into middle school. The teachers are great with communication to parents as well as making the expectations of the work known to the students (so there is no "I didn't know" excuses!!) There are plenty of clubs and extra curriculars for them to enjoy as well. From what I have heard the elementary school that DS will go to in a few years is great, as is the High School that DD will be going into 9/2013

The neighborhood is great IMO. I feel super safe living here too (like PP said) They drive a little quick up my block sometimes, but that's something to expect anywhere, lol. There is TONS of shopping options around, and all the little "hidden" playgrounds are great to walk or drive to. The Levittown pools is a great bonus to living here as well.

I live in N. Bellmore and grew up in Seaford, so I am very familiar with the south shore, and that's where I do most of my work as a real estate agent.

My DS is 3.5, so he is in a local preschool (in Wantagh), but will ultimately go to N. Bellmore schools. As a parent of a future student, I have been happy with what I have seen and heard about N. Bellmore schools from my neighbors, from community events, etc.

I know a lot about the local school districts, both in a professional and personal capacity, so please feel free to FM me or contact me directly - [email protected]/(516) 587-7618 - if you have any questions.

Based on the school districts you are interested in, you may also want to research Wantagh, Seaford, and Massapequa. A lot of my customers who look at Merrick and Bellmore (and N. Merrick and N. Bellmore - which are separate elementary school districts, and then it's Bellmore-Merrick Central for middle and high school), also look at Wantagh-Seaford-Massapequa as comparable districts.

Also, my customers who consider Levittown will often consider East Meadow, Plainedge, Island Trees school districts.

If you are doing online research, these sites may be helpful to you:

Keep in mind that if you commute, Oceanside is going to be a bit more out of the way, both for the LIRR and access to parkways. For the LIRR, being on the Babylon train line (Merrick to Massapequa) is a plus, because they run so many trains.

Re: Moving to Nassau - Need some Guidance

I moved from the Bronx after being born and raised there for 30 years to North Bellmore and love it! Ds will be entering kindergarden in September and the schools are great here, and surrounding towns. Houses were within our range here, a little pricier in Merrick but both school districts are the same as far as being excellent. Schools were important for us, hence the move from where I was..good luck!

Thanks everyone. Your replies are very helpful. I will be commuting into Manhattan. so, accessibility to the LIRR is important too.

I am not quite ready for a real estate agent yet. My husband and I are mostly attending open houses and driving around the neighborhoods right now.
