MSG question regarding chicken broth/DD won't eat anything but broth
My 18m old DD is very ill right now. Her usual favorite foods are of no interest. I got her to eat an entire Pedialyte ice pop yesterday... today she pushes most of it away but licks a little. She won't drink the liquid stuff, although I'm sending DH to the store to get the bubble gum flavor which she drank about 6 months ago.
Anyway, DH gave her some College Inn Broth... it was the only thing she ate, we even put it in a sippy cup for her when it was luke warm. So she finished one can, I went to open another and to my dismay... I discovered there is MSG in the stuff. I know it's supposed to not be good for anyone let alone a baby. I had a sensitivity to it when I was a kid whenever I ate chinese food. I never had a reaction as an adult. DD wants more broth, but I don't want to give her more. She's drinking water, a lot of water so I guess that's good, but b/c of the fever she's on motrin every few hours as well as tylenol in between. I'm concerned about stomach upset with no food in her. I even tried offering pretzles and gold fish crackers... she threw them on the floor. She's also on an antibiotic, which gave her diareah on top of everything... I've never been one to offer the "restaurant", but I'm trying anything and everything hoping she'll eat something. I know it gets hard with toddlers in general, but this is a bad time to become picky if that's what it is. The fever was down to 100.3 (has been as high as 102.6) this morning, will be taking it again soon. Unlike my usual trying to keep her active, I'm confining her to a high chair and lots of crib time in hopes of getting some bedrest. She's not eating enough IMO to do much else and expend energy. Plus, I have to manage to keep her away from the 4m old. Very tiring few days.

Swanson broth is MSG free. I just realized this about the College Inn broth the other day and plan on returning my other container.

We use the organic low-sodium broth from Trader Joe's. I won't buy products with MSG either.

There are a few brands without MSG in them. You may also want to try pediasure. DD is sick right now too and refusing most foods. I gave her chocolate pediasure in her sippy cup and she finished the entire thing.

I can't have any MSG (killer migraines) so I have been on a mission to avoid it. You also have to be careful with "Autolyzed Yeast Extract" its MSG with another name. Look at the labels carefully.
There is some broth by Kitchen Basics that you can try or I think another by a company called Pacific ? (I can't remember the full name.
I think you can find the 2 i mentioned at Waldbaums.

Re: MSG question regarding chicken broth/DD won't eat anything but broth
I'm sorry--- As I was reading it I thought at some point you were going to take your sick child to Maddison Square Garden and wanted to know if you'd be allowed to bring soup in `
I'm sorry your DD isn't feeling well. Hopefully she gets better soon. Not sure about the MSG, but Campbells Soup makes a beef consume that might work for you - or maybe an organic brand? I agree - when they are that sick, and not eating you have to be a restuarant. Hopefully my preconception of your issue will lighten your mood a little

While I agree about the nutrients, where would I start? Seriously, I hated my mom's chicken broth growing up - it tasted like pee-pee and she'd spend like 12 hours making it. I felt bad for anyone to put that much effort into something that tastes like it should be flushed. Therefore, I'm kind of biased against home made. I considered Ben's kosher deli for some matzoh ball soup, but the closest is on Old Country Road which we are avoiding at all costs till after the holidays. Even if I had a recipe to follow, today was not the day to break out a pot and start a fire. DD was so clingy and only wanted mommy all day, plus I haven't slept since she got sick. If there is a recipe out there that doesn't taste like my mom's/grandmother's, I'd gladly take it.
DH did pick up the swansons and he must have read some minds b/c he came home with the chocolate pediasure. However, I was hesitant in giving it to DD b/c the label says for kids 2 and up and she's not 2 yet. The doctor only mentioned pedialyte. I may offer it to her tomorrow if we have the same issue, however, I think her appetite may be making a comeback. When I put her to bed she signed that she wanted food.

- Yes, that was very funny. Imagine... asking if I can bring soup into a Knicks game or something.

its so easy. I grab a few chicken thighs and throw them in a pot with water, salt, a little poultry seasoning and thyme and let simmer for a few hours.
I had Hyperemesis when PG so my midwives had me drinking homemade broth all day long for nutrients.
Hope she feels better....
