MTHFR

I just found out this morning that I have MTHFR and got referred to an RE.

Has anyone else on here been diagnosed with this?

I am nervous but relieved at the same time that hopefully this will help me as I cannot imagine going thru another miscarriage so soon.

Re: MTHFR

That's an easy one to take care of (luckily). Not sure which one you have mutation. I think its just a high dose of folic acid in the form of Folgard 5,000 units or Lovenox shots. At least you know what the issue is and I am sorry for your loss but hopefully now you can go on to have a beautiful healthy pregnancy.

Re: MTHFR

I have MTHFR Homzygous A. Do you know what type you have? Unfortunately there is not much information out there on the type that I have. I have consulted with 2 hematologists and my RE, and they believe that the type I have would contribute to late losses (comforting, right) but not early losses like I've had. I take a baby aspirin a day, and the extra folic acid that's in my pre-natals. They think that's enough-but it's always in the back of my mind wondering if I need to do more.

One of the hematologists said that when I do get my BFP that I should push to be put on lovenox just in case.

I have two copies of MTHFR. It's VERRRRY common an of all my IF issues, it's like the least worrisome and the easiest to solve. You'll probably be on metanx and and baby aspirin, or maybe lovenox too for your pregnancy. You should probably be on something like metanx and baby aspirin as a regular maintenance drug regardless of pregnancy though. I'm pretty sure that's what I'll be doing. Your body does not break down folic acid so metanx is already broken down. Folic acid is essential pregnant or not. Good luck!

Everyone actually has two copies of the MTHFR gene, you inherit one from each of your parents... it just depends whether you inherited ONE defective copy or TWO (and which variant). Having 2 "bad" copies of the gene means you are homozygous (as opposed to heterozygous/one copy). I am homozygous for the C677T variant. Whatever you do just be sure NOT to take synthetic folic acid- you have to take folate or methylfolate. I take 3 mg daily of 5-MTHF (made by Thorne Research, a very natural vitamin company, no synthetics!), they were recommended by my OB. I think taking the high dosage of folate coupled w/ meds for my other issues (lupus) is what has enabled me to carry to term (so far!! I am 37 weeks along now, never thought I'd make it!). I tried Metanx (which is like folgard) and had a horrible reaction- our bodies sometimes do not do well with over-methylating too fast....you need to start on a low dose and work up. I started 1mg daily, and I take 4mg a day now if you include what's in my prenatal.....speaking of which- make sure to take a prenatal w/ folate NOT folic acid- I take Thorne Research's basic prenatal (also 3 pills a day, this is why I carry around a pill box! lol). Good luck!! FM with any questions.

Re: MTHFR

Do you mind me asking how they found you had this? Regular genetic testing?

It's a clotting issue found easily through the RPL panel.

MTHFR

Thanks everyone for their responses. I have now done my own research and met with an RE, and now I fully understand the homozygous C677T variant, which I do have. I started on synthetic folic acid but last week switched to metanex and I have found that it has made such a difference. I just feel so much more energized then I ever did before. I also started taking baby asprin once a day.

The re did a lot of blood tests and my homocycstein level came back fine, which is a relief..... but my progesterone level is low so I will be taking progesterone cream as well..

The RE wants me to go for an HSG next month but I am unsure as if this is necessary... does anyone feel that it is? or has been thru it?
Thanks ladies!

Glad you got some answers! And HSG is unrelated to having MTHFR. It's a procedure to make sure your tubes are open to rule that out as a possible issue. I went through infertility for YEARS and managed to avoid getting one so its not absolutely necessary although for your specific case, there may be a reason your RE recommended it. Good luck!

MTHFR

I have been able to get pregnant quickly both times, so I am unsure if its just her normal work up or if I just NEED to get one.. My doctor told me to go to RE for a consult on if I just need asprin or lovenox and when we went there they bombarded me with 100 tests, genetic testing, and a HSG. I just don't see why for the HSG..

Re: MTHFR

hmm I'd def question them then and ask their reasoning. I'm not a fan of tests just because it's "the standard workup" .. See why they recommended it to YOU specifically. Chat Icon

Thanks! I researched HSG more and you are right. I called the doctor and asked they said no only if I MC again...... crossing my fingers and praying I wont.
