Multiple Cat Owners
How many cats do you have? What sexes? And do they get along?
We have a female, and I am adding another kitten, and am wondering if I should get a female or a male. I have read conflicting reports on which is better.
Thanks!

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
i have 2 male cats. They get along great! They will sleep together, they play constantly... etc. But that's not to say that my older one (2 yrs old) doesn't swat at my younger one (1yr old). My younger one (rocky) LOVES to go everywhere that Tiger goes so i'm sure Tiger gets annoyed after a while.

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
We had a male and we got a female kitten. There is a 15 year age difference between them though....so I think the most important thing was that the kitten was so much smaller than the older cat. I'm not sure if the sex of either of them was even a factor. The older cat had been alone for so long, he just needed to have his dominance over anything new coming into the situation. And he did....for a little while at least!

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
I have two females, they are twin sisters and they got along until they were about 6 months old, now they can't walk past each other without giving each other a whack or hissing.
My advice would be get a male, from what I have heard they get on better with females

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
Females are more territorial - in my experience - than males.
What is the age of your cat and what age are you looking to adopt? More often than not age plays a more significant role than gender...again, in my experience.

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
we are having this same debate
we have a 7 year old male- who is an alpha male for sure
so we have decided to get a girl kitten
we think he will do better with a female over another male and he is so attached to me- we are hoping the female kitten will be attached to my DH

When I was younger, we had two males and they got along great (it seemed), but they started marking around the house to obtain dominance - which is why I was wondering about relationships based on sex.
We aren't sure how old my cat is (she was a stray), but probably about 2-3 years old. We will be getting a kitten or younger cat.

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
Another good idea is to keep them apart when you first introduce the new kitten to the home. We kept our kitten in the bathroom for about 2 weeks at first, and then slowly let her out for supervised visits with the older cat. Once we were comfortable that they could get along, we let her out at night, and then slowly, during the day while we were at work. All in all, it took about a month to let them get used to each other. It worked though - they LOVE each other now! And my older cat is a big meanie who hates other animals!

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
I have 2 male, ages 5 and 6. One is your typical house cat, very cuddly when he wants to be but mostly he is the king of the castle. The other one is a mush at night (sleeps with us) but is very playful and active the rest of the day. They are both neutered and get along, however the 6 yr old established dominance and will make the other one move off of the bed or whatever..

That is what I am planning to do. I have the spare bedroom all set up as our incoming kitty's safe space. I hope they love each other like your kitties.

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
I have 2. My girl, Suki was 5 when we got Deisel (boy). The first few days, Suki hid from him whenever we let him in the room, but she slowly came around. Now, they are like a typical brother and sister. He annoys the crap out of her. Half the day he's chasing/attacking her and she's hissing and growling (complaining rather than true aggression) at him. At night, they settle in together and I've even caught her grooming him.
He's a pain in the @ss with her though- just LOVES to sneak-attack her. He does the same thin to the dog too....

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
I have 2 female cats both 3 years old now, we got them separately as kittens the same time we bought our home.
My suggestion is to get a diff. gender cat. For some reason my two cats don't seem to get along very well, probably because one was a stray who is kinda paranoid and a loner. I think the fact that they are females make them abit more competitive too.
Get a male, i had a male cat onceand miss him! He acts like a dog and is so much more funloving.

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
We have 2 cats, male and female (both fixed) we got them together as 6 week old kittens, but they are not from the same litter. They get along great and when the boy cat goes outside without the girl one, it is clear that she is visibly distressed (but she is quite a sensitive flower) They have just hit the 7 year old mark. Behaviourally, we have not ever had any problems at all, they get along geat, they sleep together, they groom each other, and they are wonderful with my little boy.
I suggest getting opposite sex cats.

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
We have to cats.
Our first cat is a female. Last year we adopted a male kitten. Our female cat was 7 years old when we adopted the kitten and she was the only cat in the house.
We read some conflicting reports too, but were told that female cats can be very territorial and if we brought in another female, they might not take to eachother.
In the beginning, we kept the kitten separate from our older cat because he was so small and couldn't defend himself. Our older cat didn't like him in the house. We had to keep a close eye on them when they were in the same room.
Eventually we started leaving them alone together for short periods of time. There was a lot of chasing, swatting and hissing, but now they get along pretty well.
I doubt we'll ever see them curled up together sleeping, but they do sleep on the same couch or on the bed together at times. They get along much better now.
Good luck!!

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
We have 3.....two males and a female.
The female was the first, and she is the MOST tempermental, she hides a lot , is not as outgoing etc..
The males were next at different times and they are much more laid back with each other they are 100% fine, they are better with our dog etc.

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
I have 3 males and a female and I feel bad for the female sometimes because the males pick on her. Now none of them can go near her without her hissing or growling...

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
I have an older female cat and just got another female kitten.
My older cat just wants to be left alone, and the kitten just wants to play... so I think that is more the issue than "territory". But, I have separate food dishes for them both and separate litterboxes as well.
Good luck!

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
I have two girls. One is 9 and one is 6. The older one did not accept the kitten at all. There was a lot of hitting, hissing and growling involved and there still is. I think they have learned to tolerate each other, they even sit together on a certain chair that they are both obsessed with. Its not easy, but two girls can work.

Re: Multiple Cat Owners
I have two. One female and one male. The female is a year and a half and the male is 8 months old. They get along fine. No fighting and they pkay together. I have heard that it is best to get the opposite sex if you have a female. In my experience males get along better.
