Museums for Kids

Just got back from LICM with my 4 and 7 year olds. The younger one liked it but the older one thought it was just "OK." I'm looking for some educational places, like museums, that are interesting AND fun. I'm assuming I need to take them to the city, right?

My son is 8. He likes the Cradle of Aviation Museum a lot, right next to LICM. He also liked the Vanderbilt planetarium when we went (in Centerport). Old Bethpage Restoration Village is educational and fun.

My son also liked the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery... he went with his class this year (I haven't been).

He really loves the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan. So much to see there! But niot as hands on as some other places.

Museum of Natural History in Manhattan! My boys are 7 and 5 and loved it. They also love the movies Night at the Museum. You should show it to them before going. You can spend a while there.
We've been to a lot in Washington DC over a year ago and they loved it too. Especially the Air and Space museum.

My boys (also 4 & 7) love the Cradle of Aviation and the NY Hall of Science in Queens. The Science Museum is one of their favorites.

If we are talking about off of LI, Philly would be a great trip. The "Please Touch" museum and the Franklin Institute (science museum) would be great for a 4 and 7 year old. There's the Philly zoo, too.

The MET is also pretty cool / just can't touch most of the stuff. They have a kid's map that we ended up turning into a scavenger hunt.

Personally, I think the American Natural Science Museum is weird. We've been to a lot of really great zoos to see live animals so it's weird (and kinda gross) to see all the dusty old diaramas of the animals. I'll admit that the giant whale room and the Dino rooms are good, but the rest is too out dated to me.

I heard there's a kids museum in Manhattan but we never went. I thought the kids museum in Brooklyn was just ok, but I agree that the Science Museum in Queens is good.

In LI:
Cradle of aviation
firefighter museum (small, but if your 7 year old actually reads about the exhibits, it's good)
Whaling museum (near Cold Spring)

In City:
Transit museum (Brooklyn)
Museum of Natural History
Planetarium
Met
MOMA (but art museums require restrained kids)

In Westchester:
Katonah art museum: do the paid children art programs
Wave hill museum (and planetarium) which has great children art programs

In CT:
Bruce museum
Stepping stones (again, if you spend time reading, you will get more out of it)
Discovery Museum and Planetarium
Mystic Seaport and museum (it's a trip, but I've done it in a day)

My kids love the Liberty Science Center. We also do the Museum of Natural History pretty regularly (we have a membership).

The New York Historical Society has a really good kids section downstairs. I don't think many people know about it because it is never crowded. It is across the st from the natural history museum. Also the transit museum in Brooklyn.
